Camp supplies should be usable from camp chest. It's ridiculous to think that the travellers can't go to the chest to grab something to eat. Why do they have to keep it in the backpack? It's annoying to having to keep them in the backpack at all times.

Pretty sure they are. At least from the main camp chest. Annoyingly you do have to either move them manually or right click one at a time and send to camp.

Unless your game is bugged you can use camp supplies and other food in the chest. I move all of the food to camp and when i go to rest I can choose.
