I've read on the forums (search 'skills') that true shot, some of the weapon expertise's that add an amount of damage and not a percentage (axe, crossbow...), and a couple of others are bugged. It would be nice to have a definitive list of what isn't working as listed on the skill, and how it actually does work if possible.

Yes, but it does not appear that true shot, spear expertise, etc. were fixed in that bunch

I too would appreciate a comprensive list of currently broken skills and skills that work differently than listed in-game.

Such a list would be a guide for my gameplay, for future players that come to this forum asking the same question, and I imagine it would be useful to show Larian -- so they know what we know and can hopefully fix it.

Excerpt from the old forum: Way of the ranger

Styks:
First, the STR damage bonus is well shown on the stats screen, but never used in battle. If the STR is not supposed to give any damage to rangers, then maybe you should not display the bonus.

Second, the True Shot skill is supposed to add damage, but it doesn't seem to add anything. At level 5, it adds 10+20 damage, which should be 10-30 or something like that, but it's only written on the stats screen (when you hover the mouse on the damages : skill : 20-20) and on top of that, these 20 bonus points doesn't seem to be taken into account!

Can you please do something or explain to us the meaning of all this?

I'll add that the "Augment damage" skill doesn't seem to work. In fact for bow users, only the bow base damage is taken into account...
All augment damage skills are useless... what a waste of skill points!

Alarys:
I'll lend my support behind this topic, as I went into the game out of curiosity to try it out.
Using the level 5 version of the Path of the Ranger's augment damage skill abilities, I could see no addition to bow damage at all. It looks totally broken to me as well.

The only one that worked was Splitting Arrows. The Elemental Damage, Spiritual Damage, and Poison ones seemed to do nothing.

LintMan:
I think the ranger path skills work better than you guys are saying. The elemental damage bow skills all work OK for me. In fact, I'd say that Elemental Arrow is almost overpowered. I easily decimated the entire orc camp with one point in EA skill after my beefed-up melee skills proved inadequate against even individual Elite Orcs. Things got almost too easy, so I later switched back to melee.
Perhaps you are misunderstanding how the ranged skils work? Unlike the melee skills, the ranged ones are not passive (except True Shot). So you must select the specific skill and right-click to use it. Also, I think the damage listed in the elemental skills is the base damage, not a bonus (I'm not sure on this, though, but that's how I read it). But with elemental arrow, I think each of the two twisting shots does the full damage, because, for example, I've seen 140 damage from a combined hit, when the skill was rated for 70 damage.

So, anyway, I can't say if True Shot actually provides its benefit, but I can definitely verify that the elemental ranged skills work well, especially Elemental Arrow and Exploding Arrow, which work great.

Styks:
Well actually elemental arrows, as well as explosive, poison etc. are base damage, and is not a bonus to your base bow damage.
What i think is wrong is not that kind of skills, i think that the following skills does nothing at all for rangers:
- augment damage
- true shot
- and any STR bonus that would usually apply to any weapon.

Alarys:
They aren't passive? Oh, well that explains what I was seeing in my observations above.
That's a bit counter-intuitive to what I had expected. All the Warrior adds to damage are passive. Good to know, though.

Arieal:
That sucks I was a ranger too (until I lost my savegames) I noticed that true shot didn't work indeed. That really sucks!
Btw. a little offtopic maybe, but what class is the best for ranged skills? A warrior or a survivor?

FRS:
I actually like a mage for a ranger.
-you don't need high HP b/c you will be away from the battle
-As a mage you would be away from the battle casting spells anyway
-If you play a ranger based on a warrior class your special skill is wasted as it does not work with the bow
My main complaint with the ranger class is there don't seem to be many 'special' bows like there are swords. I want my Bow of Chaos and my Nobleman's bow, and my Bow of the Gods, and my Deathknight's bow.....*sigh*

That is how I beat the game for the first time, as a Mage-ranger on normal hardness lvl.

Oh, yes...The elemental damages DO work, they are not passive....but true shot, i'm not so sure about.

Further excerpt from the Forum about True shot

Kris:
True Shot tests:

OK, I went to the Wasteland, bought a bow, cornered an imp and then saved.

(The poor imp had no idea how he was going to suffer over the next half an hour )

I killed him 5 times with the basic bow and noted down the hits made. They
varied between 3 good hits to kill up to 7 weak ones. The average of all hits in the five cases were as follows:

50 65 85 95 and 114

Then I tried adding all 5 levels of True Shot in one go and doing the fight 5 more times.

Results:

47 74 88 89 100

(An average of around 80 per hit in both cases)

Conclusion.

True Shot is either busted, next to useless or doesn't work with bows the way I think it should. OR my testing method was flawed due to not knowing enough about how the fight calcs are done (i.e. I could see the imp already in my test save, so maybe the new stats would not be added until the next "new" monster? )

But I also then ran off and found some new and different enemies (with all 5 true shot skills in place) and tried 20 more hits. Result was an average of only 50 points per hit.

I realise that the random element is a very big factor in fights and that this is not a very extensive test - but I would expect to see some difference reasonably quickly between 0 levels and 5 of the skill.

So is True Shot busted or useless please, and if so will the patch fix it?

ArisEiswind:
it works good in combination with bow mastery and a high dex.
i had no problems with that skill.

Kris:
So how did you know what improvement you were getting from that specific skill and whether the results you got were due to True Shot or the other aspects that you mentioned?
Did you actually test it, or did you just feel that it was OK??

Also, why should it depend on having good levels in other skills, if indeed it does require that?

It certainly doesn't seem to live up to the descriptions that come with it.
After further testing it also seems as if Augment Damage and Crossbow Expertise also don't work properly.
Some skills are clearly labelled as not applying to ranged attacks, but Augment Damage is not described as a 'melee weapon only' skill yet I could find no improvement whatever to bow or crossbow damage after adding all 5 levels in one go. Whereas if I equipped an axe the improvement was immediately obvious.

The same was true with Crossbow expertise. The stated rate of fire increase definitely did work, but the promised increased damage didn't.

Bows and Crossbows seem badly broken by these problems. Has anybody else done any test on this that would seem to either confirm or disprove it?

I have no trainers running, and a legal game with the CD in the drive.

ArisEiswind:
i've tested this in the same way, i maxed one skill and watch the results, then reloading and do the same with the other skill, i 've combined them and see better results.
so it's ok for me and it seems to work fine.

if i use a bow, is logically to max. the bow expertise skill and to max. a skill with more dmg. true shot makes more dmg. and this was my first choice.

augmented damage only works with melee weapons, sure it's not shown correctly in the description from the skill and you have to find this out by yourself.

you need a high attackrate for a bow and you get it over the dex. without a high dex you're not able to guide your arrow into the heart of a monster...

Kris:
Thanks ArisEiswind,
Good to have it confirmed that Augment Damage is badly labelled, and is melee only.

The True shot discussion is also going on some other threads, and other people are all saying that it IS busted and doesn't work, so I'm interested to hear that you think you were able to get some improvement from it.

I'll try maxing out the other skills first and see if I can pick any change - although I don't believe that there is any reason that you should need to do that to get a skill to work (unless the game tells you - eg. 60 strength needed, or whatever).

Thanks for the replies.

Results of experiments Barnabus made
Quote
Also hier schon mal meine ersten erkenntnisse.

Translation:
My first results, I've tested with bow and crossbow

Bow expertise: works
Crossbow expertise +/- speed = works /damage bonus = does not work
augment damage: works with all other weapons
spiritual arrow: works, but spir.- res of monsters must be considered
elemental arrow: works, but all res. of monsters must be considered
explosive arrow: works
poison arrow: works, but poison res. of monsters must be considered
split arrows: works

True Shot? Don't know if it works or I have to do something special with it - couldn't see additional damage.

Please, take care what passive/active skills are. Active skills have to be activated with the right mouse click otherwise they won't function.

so is this still all speculation or are these skills listed above the ones that do not work. I have seen that a lot of people have close relations with larian itself, wouldn't they be able to say exactly what skills are broken and what skills are not?

Kiya's translation of Barnabus' experimentation is with the latest patch (v1.33); the post before that with quotes from the old forum referred to the hotfix (v1.32).

Xavier, Barnabus tested the last version - so no speculation.
