Hi people...

I just completed DD with an fighter-ARCHER... it was a breeze.

just for the record: i relied heavily on the following skills: maxed bow mastery, maxed true shot (not knowing it - allegedly - doesn't work ), elf sight (so I could shoot them from far away), sword mastery (for the few fights i couldn't use my bow), augment defense, and a very high strength and agility. Not to forget poison weapon, and split arrows. And restoration of course. (With poison weapon, the end fight took exactly (I timed it) 15 seconds...) Didn't do any summoning, but occasionally highjacked one of the enemy's summoned beings to do my dirty work for me. Later in the game I maxed the divine spell that lets you add 40% to all your stats and resistances. I completed the game at level 43 with 5 skill points unallocated (I was waiting until i'd need them somewhere).

Now I'd like to play a completely different character, completely magic-focused.

I'd like to hear stories about what spells work, which ones don't, which spells you'd max, if you'd go for summoning or for damage or for boosting, blah blah

Also, has anyone played the game without putting actual points into weapon skills or agility/strength? how did that work out? (I imagine you need at least some points in constitution, if only to be able to run away, but I just started boosting my agility to be able to use a bow... which I actually thought I wouldn't do at all )

Another question: do I go Hell Spikes or (whatever the fire arrow is called) all the way first? Which one is going to give me more 'bang for my skill points'?

Thanks for your input Remember, I'm only a newbie!

I played mage and my brother played warrior. Mage is weaker. The biggest problem is mana (or Magic- I don't really know why "magic", no "mana"). I putting points into intelligence, but I still have not enought. That isn't good that there is no mana replenishment (f.e 1 magic point/5 sec). Mage has "powerfull" spells but warriors skills give you the same damage (f.e. Elementar arrow) and cost only 1 mana(magic) point. Truely powerfull spell is "Freeze" , but for warrios available are weapons with this spell. Second powerfull is "Restoration" but you can't win when you only heal yourself.
I don't speak that mages are weak, I think they're weakers then warriors.

By the way: I finished the game.

I would use metor strike instead of hell spikes because it does lots more damage and you can wipe out the intipe 5th level army in the catacombs with that spell and some mana potions. You will want to put at least a few points into a weapon skill because you will need it for atleast the very eary part of the game.

I posted a mage's guide after YOU mentioned it in another post. Maybe you should take a look at it.

bwah...

If you mean a physical stat, yeah i might get at least 30 in both str and ag, but sword or bow masteryis exactly what I don't want to take... (neither will I take traps, for that matter or pick pocket (I found a +1 pick pocket item))

about maxing meteor strike... It looks like that won't be needed I finished 3 levels of the dungeons with only one rank in it... Level 6 by now. One strange thing is that it does more damage than it should do (8+20 or so... and it frequently does 35-ish damage...)

I might go for 30 str, 30 dex, 30 con and all the rest in int... Since there's probably no maximum anyway, that 'll give me plenty of mana to last the whole game. Are there monsters you can't defeat with magic?

(btw I now have: freeze 1, meteor strike 1, spikes 1, elfsight 2, identify 2, summon rat 1... I might take blind or slow, the elemental spells, and maybe the elemental arrows, though this takes me back to the old Archer theme... which was toooooo eeeeaaaaassssyyyyyy.)

EDIT: Why, Thanks, KAAN!

Your wellcome...

BTW, "Meteorstrike" does more damage than it should do according to its description. I think, it is because as you level up, the spell gets stronger. But don't rely on only this fact and spend more points on it (3 points would do).
One more advice: You will come across many spellbooks on your way. So, playing a mage you can gain ranks from books for the spells that you need. Regardind to this fact, avoid spending more than 3 skill points on spells. It sucks when you find (Whether in traders or while wandering around) a spell book which gives point to a spell that you already have 5 ranks. I really suggest you to take a look to the thread which is about spell books that you can find in game. Or skills you can gain by completing quests.

EDIT:

30 STR and AGI is too low. However I completely agree with CON. Always remember that your source of mana and vitality should be magic bonuses from items and charms instead of stats points on INT and CON. Let me explain its reason with an example:
One gold charm with INT bonus gives 10 INT which means 60 mana (10 INT*6 mana per INT=60 mana) for a mage, where a gold charm with mana bonus gives directly 100 mana. As long as INT has nothing to do other than increasing mana reserves, it will be wise to use mana charms/items instead of INT charms/items. Same goes for vitality. Your stamina will be low though, but then, you can sacrifice stamina for your own good.

I think playing mage is one of the easiest classes.

You only need one spell and a lots of magic potions, and you can kill them all.
dunno the exact name of the spell, but it is the last spell for mages.

Mobs don't have any chance to attack you, cause they re stunned in sort of way.

For the rest if you're out of potions, there is also a bow which give till 171 damage.

so mages rule!!

Here are my suggestions for playing a mage character:

At each level up, put 2 points in Strength, 1 point in Agility, and the remainder of points in Intelligence. Don't put any points in Vitality. A few charms will give you more life than a mage will ever need.

In the beginning of the game put a couple of points into 'Meteorstrike'. This will be your main attack spell for the early levels of the game. But don't become too dependent on it, because at later levels of the game you'll run into a lot of creatures that are resistant to it.

I try to stay away from spells that allow a resistance check (especially spiritual) to negate the spells effect. So the following is a list of what I think are the essential spells for a mage;

*Hellspikes - Max it as soon as possible. As nothing can resist this spell. At lower levels it's not very effective, but once maxed, no other spell or weapon can hit harder or more sure than Hellspikes. If you can see a monster on your minimap, you can hit it. If you can hit it, it's dead.
*Blind - Max it as soon as possible. Once maxed, nothing can resist it. It will completely neutralize all ranged and spell cast attacks. A blind opponent can't offer much by the way of attacking.
*Survivor's Curse - This spell will rapidly lower a creature's spiritual resistance. Making it vulnerable to any attack. However, you can get away with only a couple of points in this. More is always nice, but if your strapped for points, two will do.
*Life leech - This spell will rapidly lower your opponent's hit points. You can also get away with only a couple of points in this.
*Fade From Sight - This spell will burn through your mana, but you can use it anywhere, even in full sunlight, and it is a great emergency standby. Put at least one point in it.
*Elven sight - At least 3 points. So that you can target creatures 'off screen'.
*Lock pick - No more than 3 points (you get 2 more points later on from quests).

In my opinion, these are really the only 'essential' spells a mage needs. If you wish to try out and experiment with others, I highly recommend buying every spell book you can, then seeing which spells you like best.

The following is a list of non-essential, but nice to have around skills;

*Deadly Gift - 5 points
*Aura of Command - No more than 2 points (currently bugged!)
*Enchant weapon - At least 2 points
*Augment Defense - 5 points
*Magic Barrier - 5 points

How to play a mage:

Hit first, hit hard, and don't get hit back. The PAUSE feature is your best friend. It is essential (especially against a moving target) to use it to get an accurate 'target lock' on a creature. Also learn to use and love the scanning ability (When you see a monster on your mini-map hit pause, then hold down SHIFT and scroll the screen to the monster's location, then zap them with Hellspikes). You can take out most things in the game this way, before they can even get near you or see you.

When fighting a boss, you MUST begin with 'Blind'. Follow that with a few quick casts of 'Survivor's Curse' to lower the creatures resistances. You'll have just enough time to burn through your opponent's defenses while they can't see you. Once you've taken off enough resistance, your next move is Life leech. Leech your opponent down to a sliver of life, then finish them off with Hellspikes.

When everything else fails, Fade from Sight, move out of range, release a scorpion or two, and go in for a second round.

The only problem you may find with this character build, is that it is almost invincible, and like your ranger character, perhaps a little too easy to play.

Cheers

Some people have run into a problem (many have not) where the game would crash to desktop when using Aura of Command after some point.

Playing mage is a cakewalk compared to warrior. Get meteorstrike, lightning (works on metal creatures), freeze. When high level, get the mass-damage spells like elemental hail.
When you become the divine one, get the divine death skill. Kills imps in one shot.

I've seen post after post saying how tough Josephine was. She ain't so tough after pumping in meteorstrike 5 several times! And those of you complaining about mana, you need to develop your intelligence and your potion skills. At the end of the game I had over 100 regular potions of restoration and didn't count the smaller potions.
