I have played many other RPGs, and I've noticed that there are two groups:

Unlimited, automatic Ammo: Divine Divinity, Might & Magic, Dungeon Siege

Purchased Ammo: all AD&D based games, Wizardry 8, Ultimas.

Which do you prefer better and why?

I say it depends on the game. For example, Dungeon Siege is a minimalist, sit-back-and-play game with almost no management. OTOH, Wizardry 8 is all about juggling stats and items, so naturally it would be no problem to require ammo. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/offtopic.gif" alt="" />

I prefer the unlimited ones wher the item generates the damage and you dont end up with a load of stuff in your inventory that you dont use ie a dozen different types of arrows

I don't mind either approach, to be honest.

Both have substantial advantages and disadvantages.

Limited ammo games usually give you many types of ammo to play with, but infinite ammo means you never run out.

The only game to successfully combine both systems is Tomb Raider, of course...

It depends on how powerful arrows are. If they made unapproachable by all melee enemies, then they should be limited. For arcade style play or where arrows are more of a support weapon, unlimited is fine. Thief definately should have limited ammo.
