I'm just wondering if anyone plays pen and paper DnD or Warhammer anymore. I live in the Seattle area and am having a hard time finding anyone who still plays "old school" rpg's. To me there is nothing better than getting a group together on a Friday night and roleplaying until Sunday......eatting pizza, subs, drinking, having a grand ol time.

I don't know, but from what people speak of it, and the fact that WoTC is still making money, I'd say that Forgotten Realms setting, for one, is still in style. I personally have never played Pen&Paper, though. They call it "tabletop" now, don't they? What a silly term.

I still prefer 1st Edition AD&D, although I own many of the 2nd and 3rd edition books ( + etc.). I also have my bag of "favorite" dice (20s, 12s, 10s, 8s, 6s, 4s, and my own homemade "Fate/Forget" coin). In the same box as the rest of this stuff are 8 clipboards, 2 dozen mechanical pencils, half a dozen big pink erasers, colored pencils, highlighters (3 colors), ~500 spell cards, ~500 special items cards, ~50 miniature figures, 3 drawing templates (circles, rectangles, etc.), half a dozen store-bought campaigns, 4 store-bought campaign builder sets, ~ a dozen home-made campaigns, and several disks/CDs of web sites and MS Word documents of my past AD&D adventures.

Although most of our maps were hand-drawn, I eventually bought CC2 and DD2 created by [color:"orange"]Profantasy to generate world maps and quick side-adventure maps.

At one point, I had a TV hooked up to my computer so the the players could see quick, hand-drawn sketches, call-up maps, and creature images without me having to juggle thirteen books and lowering my DM screen.

My last campaign (I DM'd most of it) took us 18 months to play. After every session, I wrote limericks to chronicle the story and posted them on my web site. When the game finished, we had exactly 100 limericks, plus a 20 chapter side adventure book about one of the PC thieves -- the lady who played the PC (a female thief) DM'd for a while, so her character needed a side-trip.

BTW, you are right: The only reasonable way to play is a Friday-night-thru-Sunday-morning marathon. Also, you really need to have 3 to 6 devoted players to make it work. It really helps if they are all coworkers and can joke about the game over lunch, at work, etc.

Do you think I take this whole D&D thing a little too seriously? If so, roll an 8-sided die for hit damage, and also roll a Saving Throw against Divine Wrath!

I really think that CRPG's take away from the whole concept of RPG's. I played in a group that consisted of 6 players and one DM. Most of us worked together and that's what made it even more fun. I know what you mean by having a set of "favorite" dice. Although my dice bag is a Royal Crown bottle holder (purple and gold bag).
Before I moved we had almost finished Return to the Tomb of Horrors ........nasty module......wish they'd make a CRPG involing more like that one though. I do enjoy Neverwinter Nights, I must admit. Although finding a group that knows how to actually RPG with it is tough. Nowadays everyone just wants to hack-n-slash thru everything.
I'll give you 10 secs to run from my Delayed Blast Fireball.......
Ready.........set................go.........

[color:"yellow"]Temporal Stasis! Now, where is my spell book? I'll need a pinch of sand, three feathers, and a paperclip.

I agree with your hack-n-slash mentality assessment. Most newbies choose that mode, and get stuck in it if the DM doesn't gently coax them into a more contemplative mode. I like to salt my campaigns with enough monsters to let fighters advance, but I balance that with puzzles and situations that give the advantage to MUs, thieves, and clerics, too. Otherwise, all you have are paladins, healers, and thieves (regardless of the multi-class/multi-racial/multi-talented/royal-heritage names and labels the players put on their PCs). If I wanted that, I'd play a CRPG -- one hero (me) and one major quest (win).

IMHO a well-played RPG should look, feel, and sound like a cross between an epic novel and a reality TV show -- burps, warts, fumbles, and all. The DM really has to prepare and also let the story unfold as a group effort (not a scripted play), but it is well worth the effort and very therapuetic.

P.S. I may not be able to post for the next week or so, as I am planning to move to Seattle, WA. The drive from Texas is daunting, so wish me luck!

I guess that's the mistery behind BG's story skills ... you've been a DM .
About tabletop RPG's ... I tried the starterset from D&D with a friend ... but it took more effort not to start laughing at eachother then anything else . I'm also not that familiar with the world D&D uses ... But I've heard there's a rulebook for the wheel of time ... So if I ever find some wheel of time fans in the vacinity (and believe me, I've never found one in the real life ) I might give it a thought though ...

I've played PnP D&D recently, until our DM and half the group graduated from college and moved out of town. What fun that was. From what I've seen there are still people out there who like to play, it's just a matter of getting them together and finding an all night coffee shop.

Oh, and BTB am I the only one who got the huge Iron Chef joke in Neverwinter Nights? It's great!

We're in Seattle now and would be very interested if anyone who lives near here wants to play pen&paper D&D or Magic the Card Game.

Yes we are playing with some friends. Mainly Greyhawk world and Ravenloft. Forgotten Realms it is not the favorite for our DM. Everybody must try this kind of game. I know people who didnt know anything about fantasy world, they didnt like RPGs in PC but after playing AD&D (pen and paper) became great fans of it.

I'm in Seattle now, too. What a coincidence! Maybe we could start a Seattle DD, AD&D, Magic Club? I'll submit the incorporation papers next week! WooHoo!

I remember...my first time i cast a fireball. I was lvl 5 Invoker and believe me i was waiting for this spell 3 months since i got the appropriate level for castin lvl 3 spells. I was ready to burn a group of hostile orcs and kobolds and goblins and.... Then suddenly 4 skeletons where in front of me guarding the entrance of a cave. I said to my company members:

Me:"Let me transform their bones into dust!"
Party:"Oh yes great Wizzard, get rid of these skeletons as soon as possible"

I took the components i start casting the spell..."fire bla bloom boom" (the words) and 5 D6 in their face!!!

Final Damage: 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 6 HP

Guess what? The skeletons saving through was succesfull so the actual damage was 3 HP. They had 5 HP each.

Imagine what happened!!! Everybody was laughing at me!!! I still cannot forget this moment!

Really, Pen and Paper RPG gives you great moments. You should try this but i suggest you play with your friends. There is a lot of fun in this game!

pen and paper is the BEST way to play an RPG game. I have played for almost 20 yrs now. Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms are my favorite worlds. I am not sure why, but Ravenloft STILL gives me nightmares. I moved away from the group that I played with and they are still at it. This was the theme for my bachlor party, that was one hell of a night. I hope everyone that is looking for a group to play with finds one.
May my favorite God, SET, watch over you.

I've been trying to get into D&D but i'm having a lot of trouble. I tried vs. my partner, but with a DM and one player playing a whole party, it kind of sucked.

We finally managed to join a group but the first game we were to attend was cancelled to everybody's work shift's changing.

Does anyone here play in Melbourne, Australia?
