I just wanted to post some info about a game that I think deserves more recognition that it's getting at the moment. Shameless advertising? Perhaps...

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth (XBOX)

Over 5 years in the making it's finally out on the Xbox with a possible but unconfirmed PC release sometime early next year I gather.

Being a big fan of HP Lovecraft and the Call of Cthulhu RPG pen and paper game (check my sig) I just thought I'd let anyone who's into something that will probably scare their socks off this Halloween, should think about getting this.

I get my copy tomorrow, so I can't 100% say it's great, but by all accounts on the cthulhu site forum, naysayers and jaded people who waited 5 years for this, have nothing but awesome praise for it.

Tomorrow can't come quick enough for me... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

If there is a PC-verision, I think I'll get it. There is a Chutulu sub forum in another forum I browse (my brother's rpg group, I'm just there because they often post nice tests).

Well I got the game last night and played for 3 hours (before having to go to bed at 2 AM!!)

Brilliant, it's what I wanted and more. 3 hours in and I've yet to even hold a gun. The story pulls you in for hours at the beginning as you investigate around, slowly but surely coming to realise that you may be in WAY over your head on the case your investigating.

The immersion level is top notch, with no HUD clutering up the screen you really get drawn into the game. Sanity effects also creep you out, peering over a ledge induces a bit of vertigo, blurring your vision and making you dizzy.

Seeing dead bodies (or other things you shouldn't want to see on an average trip to a cultists abode) get your heartbeat racing, the joypad vibrating and your sense of dread up.

Your character can be pushed over the edge, start hearing voices in his head - and if things go too far, he could take his own life.

Graphics and sound are top notch - the atmosphere that the dark brooding graphics and sound create are fantastic, drawing you into the 1920's New England era.

It's an adventure/first person game, with elements of FPS later when you find (and need) some guns to defend yourself. It gets to the point where the NPC's in the game have had enough of your snooping...then all hell breaks loose.

If you have an Xbox, and want a different gaming experiance from all the 'kill everything in site' FPS games out there, I highly recommend it.

Sounds like a Silent Hill but with more depth guns. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

I think I'm going to get it; I like those horrific games that test sanity. Mouahahah! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" />

So, its really that good? Your guy can just go out of his mind with what he's witnessing. Wow. Thanks for pointing this game out Plowking, I probably would have missed it. I, personally, will be getting it for the X-Box.

Been looking forward to this since it was announced, and that's indeed ages ago. Too bad it's only out for the XBOX at the moment, 'cause my XBOX (v1.0) is starting to puke out DVD's at random. The DVD-ROM is so very picky, I could never really get myself to play Fable because loading a level took so much time. As a big Lovecraft fan, however, I'm obliged to play this...

Gamespot XBOX review

I love the atmosphere and setting in Lovecraft's writings, and it's apparently difficult to get that atmosphere in a game. I don't think the "Alone in the Dark" series, at that time juggling with Lovecraft's name, ever managed to recreate it. The best game that ever boasted "Lovecraft" on the cover, was probably "Shadow of the Comet" IMHO...

I felt the same way...though I only found out about Shadow of the Coment and Prisoner of Ice a couple of years ago. You can get them on some sites, but they dont run well on the new PC's.

It's a pity about your Xbox acting up. Draw an eldar sign on it, make a few incantations...and perhaps it'll work! Or just melt before your eyes...

I hope at least my attempt at a mythos adventure game can create some sort of lovecraftian atmosphere...even if it is in flash!!

I bought the game for PC today <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />. And my first question: When will you get your hands on a gun so you can defend yourself? And the second question, is there a way you can run? Walking when you're hunted by guys with axes feels kind of... wrong...

PS Now it will be a lot of Kalle's saucepan. DS

You won't get a gun for the first 30% of the game, which adds a lot to the atmosphere imho.
And there is no way to run, but I always felt the normal speed is ok (I suppose you don't sneak or crouch)

I'm nearly through the game now, and can only recommend it - and it's pretty cheap already, so don't hesitate to pick it up! =)

I was referring more to a weapon, not to a gun in particullar. And when you ARE hunted (ie when you screwed the sneaking up), just being able to walk is kind of a drawback...

You can still get away (with running this would be too easy to just run from corner to corner and hide - the npcs are not the smartest unfortunately)
or just get a little better at the sneaking <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
And you get other weapons pretty much at the same time as guns if I remember correctly (I think you even get a gun before you get eg a crowbar)

I was pretty sure you could run? Maybe that was Xbox only - cos on the Xbox if you push the stick all the way forward Jack would move pretty fast. It's analog, so you could creep and walk too.

Remember to exit sneak mode before trying to get away! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

Yes, and that song has nothing to do with this game <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />.

I'd like to call you all, too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I'm just jealous that Ctulhus simply have to call to get an own topic (and such a big fan base in role playing). <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Here's another Cthulhu esque game developed by 4 people - I think it looks great!

I downloaded the demo:

Penumbra

But it crashed when I got to the actual gameplay section. Going to bring it home and try on the my own PC.
