Did you check the description on Kiya's site? If so, at what point are you running into a problem?

After changing your strength in the save editor, did you save there, and then re-load that saved game in the DD? Welcome to the forum.

Hello! To visually illustrate what Raze is saying: Also, it's usually a better idea to just give yourself the free points and allocate them once you're back in the game, rather than trying to change the levels in the editor.

If you open the skill window in the game, what level is shown for Hell Spikes? If you use the editor to give yourself a few spare skill points, can you learn the skill to a higher level (within character level requirements)?

Spellbooks will allow you to advance past character level requirements, so I would guess the save editor may just miss changing another value in this case. If I have time tomorrow I'll take a look at this.... Keep a look out at merchants when trading, and you may find a Hell Spikes spellbook for sale (I found or bought 2 in my first game). Until you get your character level up, Meteorstrike is quite effective even at level 1 (it can be cast repeatedly quite quickly, and has a bit of a stunning effect). If you quick save before running your mouse over an item/chest/merchant or hitting the alt key, you can identify the item or trade with the merchant, then quick load to get different stats or inventory. This can be done repeatedly to get the best stats or specific bonuses on an item (save after finding good candidates) or looking for specific items (such as spellbooks or charms) from merchants. Don't waste too much time with this, though. To copy an item; quick save the game, then drag an item out of your inventory, but not somewhere there is a red X. Without dropping first, quick load the game, then release the mouse button when it starts to load. This will produce a copy of the item on the ground, with the original still in your inventory. There is a much easier method for items which can be stacked; Drag a stack out of (or into) your inventory (or container) and hold down the control key before dropping. This will bring up the split stack pane; type in a negative number and hit enter (the checkmark will be greyed out). This can also be done in the trade window.

In a new game I opened the catacombs and freed Lanilor to get up to level 1, then learned Hell Spikes. After that I could use the editor to apparently increase the skill level, but as you found the damage done and mana used actually corresponded to level 1 of Hell Spikes. I then used the save editor to increase the character level past what was needed for level 5. Just leveling up made no difference to Hell Spikes, so I unlearned it using the editor and relearned it after reloading the save. There were too many differences between the skill sections of the data.000 files before and after re-learning Hell Spikes to isolate exactly what is missed by the editor. A slightly different approach should minimize the difference, which I may be able to try in the next couple of days, or so.

Well, after starting a new character (a mage this time rather than a warrior), editing the save to jump to level 25, reloading, learning level 1 of Hell Spikes and then saving again, I used that save to learn up to level 5 normally and with the editor. I ended up with more differences between the skill sections of the data.000 file this way than I did previously.
In a copy of my level 1 character save I tried replacing the entire skills section of the data.000 file from the character level 25 save after having learned Hell Spikes to level 5, but upon loading the save, casting the spell only resulted in a single set of spikes. One interesting side effect, though, was that using Hell Spikes did not drop mana at all.
With no easy/practical way to edit a save to get Hell Spikes working properly, your should use the save editor to unlearn that spell so it can be learned correctly as you reach the level requirements. You can use the editor to jump to level 25 (set your experience points at or above 5,200,000 then reload the save and defeat an opponent or complete a quest to gain some experience and trigger the level update).
Alternately, you could use another spell for now, and keep an eye out for a Hell Spikes spellbook that you could duplicate.

iZakaroN's SaveEditor (or from Kiya's site, with description) does not edit your level directly, but you can edit your experience points to give yourself enough to reach a desired level. Once you reload the game, you need to defeat an opponent or complete a quest to get the game to update your experience and trigger the level update. The number of experience required to reach a given level is given by the formula below. E = 1000*(level^3 - level)/3 For example, if you want to be at level 25, you would need to edit your experience to be E = 1000*(25^3 - 25)/3 = 5,200,000

I'm having a little difficulty here. Made an editing copy of one of my heroes and tried to use the editor to redistribute some skill points. Clicked on 'redistribute points', and found the skills I want to change. Specifically, my hero is a male warrior and I want to make him a hammer specialist (I know - it's just for fun). So I knocked off his two sword expertise points (gave him en extra point here on top of his default point for some reason - don't ask), loaded him up with 10 extra skill points, and added two to the hammer skill. I get a prompt asking 'Do you want to make backup (.old) file?'. If I select 'No', I get an error message saying 'Error saving changes!'. If I select 'Yes', I get an error message saying 'Access to an unnamed file was denied'. This is weird. A little help, anyone? Cheers.

If you don't change the skill levels and just give yourself the extra 10 skill points, do you still get the error?
In Vista, try running the save editor as administrator (right click program/shortcut). If that doesn't help, try copying the save folder (or just the data.000 file) to another location to edit from. The program was released before Vista was out, so maybe it has a problem with how Vista relocates the savegame folders, or the length of the 'users' path, or something.
If you have or learn level 1 in Sword Expertise or Augment Damage (the starting skills for the male warrior), the next time you save and load the game you will have level 2 in these skills.

Ran as administrator and it saved with no error message. Didn't have to move the file or change the path, either. Will now reditribute skill points and load the game...

First Attmept: Opened the editor, gave myself 10 extra skill points, zeroed out the two sword skill points, and put two points in the hammer skill. Loaded the game, saw zero sword skill points (like I hoped), but didn't see the two hammer points I loaded in the editor. Put two of the 10 extra skill points in my hammer skill, put 6 more in other skills (leaving 2 to spare), saved the game, opened the editor, and saw that I now have 4 hammer skill points.
Second Attmept: Reloaded 10 extra points, zeroed out hammer, saved the file and closed the editor. Opened editor again, brought hammer back to two, loaded the game, and the points showed up this time.
Weird. Any idea why the two points didn't show up when I loaded the game the first time?
