Can anyone give me complete instructions to install Microsoft's Virtual PC and also how to partition a hard drive? (Presently 80 gig)

I would also like to install DOS 2.62 (any originals around?). <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill, because they pissed me off.

i'm sorry but i have no idea what Microsoft Virtual PC is. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" />

however here are some articles on hardrive partitioning. some contradict one another. u be the judge. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

How To Partition Hard Drive (from Microsoft site)
Step-by-Step: How To Partition Hard Drive (from PC World)
Why Multiple Partitioning Is Not Worth It (from Anandtech)

in my case, i do understand why Anandtech takes such stand. however i always keep source files in a different partition as sometimes the OS can get corrupted & i get to re-install windows & the programs i want are already in the other partition instead of in many cd's all over the place.

DOS 2.62 ? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> Sure ? Not MS-DOS 6.22 ?

You could try FreeDOS, or the Demo version of Paragon's PTS DOS ...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PTS-DOS

The Demo version - if you can find it - needs 2 Minutes for startup, is otherwise unrestricted.

Another possibility is OpenDOS, if you can find it. It was a free DOS, and if you happen to dind the old files on the net, it should be possible to use it as well. It's kind of an version of DR-DOS.

Alrik...

Dr DOS was completely bug ridden. It's a bad one to use. 6.22 would be better, which you suggest <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I never knew of bugs within it.

The only "bug" I know of was that Microsoft modified Windows 3.1 so that it wouldn't install on DR-DOS.

The DOS component of Partition Magic uses a DR-DOS derivate, as well, as far as I know.

It's reputedly the least reliable DOS version, Alrik. How true that is, I can't say - but that's what I heard <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

and guess who has to write an exam on virtual pc 2007 in 2 months time <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

They are pouring the exams onto me this year.... but i suppose its not all bad <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Opinion about partitioning:

If you run a RAID 5 configuration (not common on home computers) then YES PLEASE create as many partitions as you like.... data becomming corrupt on Raid 5 is almost unheard of... if not on Raid 5.... DONT bother....

I have seen more 2nd partitions becomming corrupt after re-installing Win on the 1st prartition than not.... so yea - its a great way to assure your data safety <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> (NOT).
