I had a problem on my PC which meant I had to go back to a previous system restore point however since doing so I cannot load my saved characters without the game crashing.

I've got Divine Divinity V1.029 with 1.034 patch running on WinXP 2002 version with spk2. I've had occassional crashes before but that has been when I've had other programs running or before I turned down the colour depth to 16bit or pre-patching. The error log is below...

Error Log:

I know it may sound sad but I don't want to loose my characters if I can help it (theres about 100 hours of gaming in them!)

thanks for any suggestions in advance

Check the number of files in the saved game folder (in '..\Divine Divinity\Run\savegames'). Specifically, make sure the inv.b0 file exists.
Missing files might cause the game to crash when trying to load. A new game should have 22 files, after going to either Verdistis or the Dark Forest it should have 27, after going to both it should have 32, after getting to the wastelands it should have 37, and after getting to the Black Ring dungeon it should have 42.

The game saves files to a temporary folder before moving them to a folder without the .tmp extension. This is to prevent a working save from being damaged if there is a problem during the save process when overwriting an existing save.
Either the game was not successfully completing the save process for some reason, or the system restore 'fixed' the save folders.

Are you adding the '(2)' to the end of the save name, or is that something Windows may have done? AFAIK the game does not use that notation for anything.

Try deleting all of the files in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder. With the patch installed (or a re-release version already updated to 1.0034A, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu) resetting the configuration files after a crash when prompted should clear the dynamic folder.
This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity. If there was a corrupt file in that folder, deleting the files should fix the problem.

Thanks Raza for the reply

There is no inv.b0 file in either of the two saved game files...total files number 21. I didn't add the "(2)" to the file names, I'm assuming this was done during the windows system restore "fix".

I've done a trail save and load, it's working fine...so do I assume with the missing file that the saved games are dead?!?!

You can replace the inv.b0 file to get the saves to load, but you will loose some or most of your equipment and inventory. Spare loot in chests should be ok, so it may be easier to recover your inventory than to replay the start of the game.

see; HUGE loading problem

Hello,

Has someone heard about the following error?

I recently bought Divine Divinity (the original version) and am playing on a Windows Vista system. The game has worked just fine for a week or so but now when i try to load my saved games I get a "decompression" error saying it has exceeded a certain size and won't load any of my saved games. I can start a new game fine, but can't get the old ones to play.

I downloaded the 1.34 patch 4 or 5 days ago and have been playing since then with no issues but the decompression problem started this morning.

Then I have pointed him to several threads with (more or less) the similar problem, but to no avail.

Thanks for the note. The threads you sent all seem to deal with trying to start a new game. However, I have played for a couple of weeks. My problem is trying to load a SAVED game. When I do I get the following message:

Decompression exceeds maximum buffer size. Decompression size = 105882, maximum size=8192
It had never done that before and all of a sudden did it one morning and now does it all the time and won't let me load any saved games.
Let me know what you find out! Thanks!

I couldn't find a solution.
Hope that someone can help this gamer, thank you.

A new game can be started; can it also be saved and then loaded?

A similar error was quoted in the topic Lost all saved games??. In that case the saves were fine, and the problem fixed by reinstalling the game.

Thank you, Raze!
I'll forward this to the gamer.
