There's an event in Australia, the World's Greatest Shave. It's run by the Leukaemia Foundation to fund research in treating and curing Leukaemia. The way they raise money is by inviting people to empathise with leukaemia sufferers: they shave your head. Shavees have people sponsor them for it.

I've haven't had a hair cut in eight years. At it's longest, straight, it was down to the small of my back. Now, I'm deciding to take the plunge and see what I can do. Take a look at what it's like now. So far I've raised almost AU$750. That's how much people are looking forward to seeing me bald. I'm having it shaved at an Irish pub in Melbourne tonight. They're hosting a show of people being shaved and coloured (and you get a free beer!) I'll post "after" pictures on the weekend.

Damn, I'm terrified...

I've seen similar events for cancer patients (particularly kids) that made a point to collect hair that was long enough to make wigs for the patients. The website above barely mentions this possibility in its FAQ.

I'm bald.

I guess I need to change my avatar now.

In total, I've raised AU$920. I'm very happy with that effort.

Thanks everyone! I've had a couple of more sponsors, thanks to my sister and the local tuck-shop near work, and rounded it off at $1,000. I am very happy with that result.

I'm still getting used to not having hair. Strangely, it doesn't feel any different for the most part. My hair was so boyant to begin with that I didn't notice it. When my head touches something it's a different experience. I leaned back while driving yesterday and thought my wife's girlfriend was touching my head. It turned out to be the headrest. I'd never known it so intimately before.

The biggest difference is whenever I see my reflection. My hair was a large part of my identity. Now I have to get to know the new me. Everyone says the new hair-style looks really good on me though. I have to get used to it before I can decide whether to keep it this way or not.

LOL! I've always wanted to shave my head since I turned 15, but my Dad refuses to even hear of it! Oh well, I guess he knows what's best for me, and here in Indonesia, if you're bald it usually means that either you've had some kind of chemotherapy, or you're a criminal!

That's why they chose shaving your head to raise money. It's to symbolise what chemotherapy patients have to endure.

I see, that's a good cause. But it's not too bad if you're a guy, if you're a girl and you're bald, (here in Indonesia) people are afraid of you, as it would usually mean that you're dabbling into some kind of occult or "darker" practices... you know, like
