Anime began in Japan, but isn't Japanese per se, anymore than an American can't perform the tea ceremony, and a Belgian can't effectively wield a katana with training. Septerra Core's story and images were definitely anime, but the CRPG itself was German-made. To me, when I first played it, it *felt* German rather than Japanese, with its emphasis on government gone bad, and people out to get you whom you can't see. Reminded me of Fritz Lang's films in that respect. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

And don't worry about being a newbie. Hell, there are millions of topics about which I'm a newbie. Ignorance is solvable by knowledge. Stupidity, not asking questions and refusing to learn, is endless. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

My pleasure! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I thought Septerra Core was a good game, though it got a bit old, pretty fast--few new strategy elements to consider as your party moved along, and pretty linear. But I could easily see the appeal of the game to others. It definitely had a good deal of originality going for it.

Speaking of originality, I'd like to put in a good word for Planescape: Torment. Now, there was an interesting universe, and a beautifully written game! What a shame Interplay's other products were doing so poorly that they decided they couldn't just make good money, and had to make great money, instead! The idea of a successor was scrapped.

It's an unusual entry for an RPG, but my all time favorite RPG has no swords or spells at all -- only spaceships. Star Control 2 was an ingenious romp through space, collecting minerals and interacting with a rich universe full of aliens (some friendly, some not). Sadly, the sequel was a complete bastardization of the goodness of #2, and any further development on the line stopped with #3.

However, it's been ported, for free -- check http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.html for a hit of space-faring RPG goodness.

An excellent game. My only gripe was that there was a timer you didn't know about that led to a universe-destroying activity--and I still wanted to explore! But it was world's above that horrid Legend Entertainment followup. Why they chose that company to make the successor title is beyond me. They'd only produced mediocre graphical adventure titles, before that.

You can buy off the Kohr-Ah's rampage of annighil... annigliga... killin' for a year if you ask the Utwig and Supox to attack them, but yeah, you're still on a fixed time line. I was ok with that, although I nearly lost the first time through for goofing around mining too long. It did put a strong emphasis on finding a solution to the overarching plot problem.

And yeah. Legend never had done anything worthwhile, and to pass the torch to them from Toys For Bob was comletely aggravating -- they had no idea what to do with the liscence. The scrapped sequel was a Wing Commander-esque space shoot-em-up; I'm glad that got relegated to the scrap heap; too bad it also took the last gasp of development with it.

I never understood why Toys for Bob stopped doing stuff like it. They were definitely one of the best teams around, not just for making a solid game, but one that offered a variety of challenges, great entertainment, and a lot of humor. Ah, well. It just seems like some of the best people have left the industry over the last decade, complaining of its increasing concern with streamlined products, all alike, and the producers who want to make nothing but.

I believe you're right about the Fallout dev team. Fallout II has a small tribute to Wasteland. For those that play FII, go to San Francisco, head to the chinese labs (can't remember their name, but it's not the hubologists), and head to the lab with a lot of computers. There's a tech that randomly mentions Wasteland.

Deus Ex was great. The gigantic maps added huge amounts to the games overall depth and non-linearity, and that key feature lacking ultimatly slashed Invisibile War's chances of success. Invisible War blew.

Anyhow, I tried and tried to get into both Gothic games but there was no way given that slip shod control scheme. I just can't play a game like that.

Because they feel that Deus Ex did a poor job at being any type of game. It was too generalised and didn't put enough effort into any one field.

ya but when you have a game that has a multiple genere concept you cant really concentrate all your efforts in one area, or the rest of the game will be lacking.You just cant compare it to a game like rogue spear because that game concentrated all there efforts on stealth and gun play and deus ex had a much larger expansion of gameplay elements.The only game you could possibly compare deus ex to is system shock 2,which i felt was much better then Deus x even.
