I played the demo for a bit and i went with a regular plain old warrior like i usualy do, but i'm wondering that perhaps its better to choose another class since my attacks were so weak against foes while the archer for example was a bit overpowerd against those summoned goblins. And the mage was somewhere in between from what i could tell.

So as i have picked up the game yesterday: is the game hard/fun being a warrior or should i choose a mage this time since he has a little of both. Or should i combine specializations (full warrior with some mage spells) but my experience tell's me that that isn't usually a good path in rpg's

Or is the game a little hard in the beginning like the gothic games, risen & perhaps even dragon age & drakensang

And one more thing about the mage, so from what i could tell from the beginning is that the mage uses his melee more then his magic or does that changes somewhere later on?

I found the difficulty to be very much like Risen. If you know what ur doing, the game can get very easy, but if your not familiar with the games secrets\ mechanics, it can be pretty darn hard. Risen however is a bit more balanced, D2 has by far the strangest balance I've seen lately, which makes it hard during some levels (you can't avoid it, in some early levels\ sections the game can be pretty hard), but it can also get very easy after those parts.

The class system is a lot like Fabels "open jack of all trades" one, which I simply love. Combining the trees is ultimately the best way to go, choosing the right skills that will support ur other skills and judging how useful they are. But you don't have to combine if you dont want to, theres nothing wrong with pure mage\ warrior (don't try pure priest thou, and be warned pure ranger might be a bit harder but it depends). The game might be a bit tough if your not going to read some basic skill explanations in a guide or something, but you'll probably do fine, remember just that the game is hard generally.

If you go pure warrior nothing bad will happen. Game will be hard at first and during some sections (unavoidable unless you know where you should train first), but ultimately you will get op at some point and should never have a real problem fighting off enemies. IMHO A warrior-mage combinatin however is actually the best one , this is the one I do on my current playtrough, but it might just be the fact that I'm more experience with the game and know how to do things.

NOTE: Explosive arrow is perhaps the only good skill in the ranger tree, but it might very well be one of the best in the game, so don't be affraid to go this path. As a warrior you'll get thousand strikes, which is also very good, but not an aoe, has a longer CD, and eats A LOT of MP... I recommend reading about the game skills in a FAQ like this one http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/952260/58701 if you care about this stuff, but even if you don't nothing bad will happened. Maybe a bit frustration smile

*gameplay* *spoiler*
You can actually reassign your talents later on in the game, so don't worry about it to much.

I didn't have any trouble at the start playing a warrior. Currently I am dual wielding axes as my main attack method, but tend to explore with a bow readied; a bow is the easiest way to break barrels/crates for loot, and it can be handy to start off combat (especially against melee opponents). Rush Attack can be great for melee characters to be able to get to mages or archers quickly, but if you jump into the middle of a group of archers and mages, you could end up in worse shape than if you had let them come to you.

On level 2 I didn't do much damage with the first bow or two I found, but could use it to provoke goblins so that hopefully only a couple out of a group would come after me. More often than not more would come, but at least they would be spread out a bit (presumably Ranger Stealth would allow you to pull single opponents out of groups better, depending on their sight range, but I have not tried it yet)

From what I experienced from both warrior and ranger, I feel that warrior might be a more stronger during final stages. I finish my 1st run through with a pure critical dual wield warrior build, and he basically is invincible during the final battle. He can kill the final boss with 1 thousand strike, and yes thousand strike now does have aoe effect, small aoe effect. Even his normal damage is quite effective, basically dealing 400+ to 500+ aoe damage per slash, where critical damage can reach around 1.1k+. I had try to alter the skill and slap a bow with him, reseted his skills to ranger, and found it not as effective while as warrior. The bow is 1 of issue with the damage as I dont have very good bow with me to try it out during that time. But in term of normal damage output, I feel the warrior should be better, as he can do aoe damage even with normal attack. Beside I find speed of bow is indeed slower compare to hack and slash of melee weapons.

Currently I playing as pure ranger in my second run and find it quite ok. The play style will be totally opposite to what I had with my warrior, as she just cant charge like a bull into horde of mobs and survive easily, especially during boss fight. A lot of evading and move around needed to be done. And explosive arrow is the only aoe skills which ranger has, since splitting arrows is not effective while using it as aoe. But splitting arrows wont be bad if you use it as a single target skill, only use on target which able to approach you in melee range and you will see its power, especially when the attack crits.

No matter which class you go, during early stages, majority will use bow to survive, as its an effective pulling tool. When your level start growing and getting better gears and skills, you will eventually use it a lot less then.

Mage is strongest class, hands down.

Level 15 Magic blast + level 5 destruction + level 5 way of the battlemage = ~8000 damage to a single target.

I love playing a warrior, but it's just not effective enough.

Allrighty then, thx for the replies everyone.
I guess my fear being a warrior was a bit exaggerated
I think i'll go with a warrior that specialises in dual wielding like i usually do and then invest in some mage skills later on. I just have to be carefull of everything that move's in the beginning just like in risen or the gothic games in general.

One more thing however:
How many hours approx. will it take to fully complete the game. I mean doing all the side quests and stuff. That is at least if they are interesting hower and not like some of bioware's mass effect 1 & dragon age's quests

I got a +1 Magic Missile belt and a +1 Magic Blast Bracelet, and that combination provides devastating damage to enemies the ame level as I am, it's like a one-hit kill most of the time.

Its very long, even if you don't aim for "100% finish". Most reviews say 40-60 hours, don't know how accurate that is since there is no timer (or is there?) in game.

BTW, don't make the mistakes of investing in VIT or SPIRIT too much. Many do it beacouse its hard early so they think they need more of those, but later on you'll get so many items with bonuses for MP and HP that VIT and SPIRIT are not needed anymore, I say pushing both to around 15-18 should be enough, but I'm not sure.

No I find spirit to be essential if you aim for mage

As a mage you can put 5 points into mana efficiency and ur good to go, magic missile which is the main attack doesn't even cost much mana anyway smile

I played for a couple of hours and i have a few questions:

-how many ending does the game have

-is there a difference when you play good or bad in this game? Or could you face 'serious' consiquenses later on a la bioware games

-What the deal with all those books lying around & the severed bodypieces of fallen creatures? Should i save those our just sell everything since that takes allot of space in the inventory.

-What summon is the best one & can you summon 2 creatures at a time?
Now i have a lvl 1 fireball spewing one and i've noticed there will be a fighter creature availlable when your high lvl but who's the one that come's in handy the most? I'm afraid to put more points into him since the high lvl one seems more interesting and he'll be a waste later on unless you can summon both of them..

-I've just finished a rather large dungeon with alot of skeletons & a questboss and i've found these 3 amulets (east, west & south?) and a book saying that i need to bring them someplace but where is that or will i encounter it on the MQ?

-Should i invest lockpicking to lvl 5 to the max?

-I found a circular place on the map with a couple of statues around and some were allready broken a bit and when i came close a mage teleported and said something about "me being worthy after beating 3 creatures". After he said that he summoned those and after beating them nothing happened afterwards. No loot, nothing. I looked around for a possible lever, button but i found nothing. What was the deal there or was that normal?

There is only one ending.

How you complete certain quests may open or close other quest possibilities, but this will not cause problems later. You might miss out on the 'best' solution or certain side quests, but there is no punishment built into the game for doing the wrong thing.

Books provide background information and sometimes hints on things to do related to a nearby area, quest, item, etc. For the most part once you have read them they can be sold or destroyed.

You can eventually bring body parts a necromancer to have him create a creature for you, which can provide support, or at least a distraction, during battle. Save the best versions of each type (though you will likely get better parts when you are closer to obtaining your creature anyway), and sell the rest.

Some people like the ghost for healing, but I think the demon is better for combat (have not tried either). I think there is a 'master summoner' spell which should allow more than one summon at a time, but I think it didn't in the unpatched game, at least.

After about half way through the game you will have the ability to re-assign all your skill points, for a price (IIRC 5k gold the first time, and it doubles each time after).

The statue you need to find is in the same dungeon with the 3 amulets, in the central area.
it is in a room at the top of the stairs going down towards the south (IIRC) branch, fairly well lit, with a plant on either side, and a grate / metal bars forming one wall of the room.

I maxed Lockpick; there is lots of loot in locked chests, but you could probably get by without it.

You will meet Bellagar the mage several more times, but you will eventually get some loot. There are chests in at least a couple of those circular shrine areas.

-No

-Sell them

-Summon deamon
Others are piece of crap
Deamon and your creature

-Explore dungeon and you will find aswer

-Yes,Max it

-Find them all
First time you need to kill some goblins I think, then demon, then undeads and ogre at the end
After you beat them go back to place where you find Talana

Now i've reached the dragontower, learned the name of the demon and talana hinted me that i should finish all my quests first in broken valley because i probably won't be able to visit that place again.

So like she told me, I teleported back to broken valley to finish up some quests but now i saw an area on the map called "fjords" so i travelled there and it looks like its an entire new map again but i'm wondering if that area is for later and i should focus first on sentinel island/broken valley or vice versa

And is it me or does the story feel so uninteresting. Half of the time i don't even know what the main characters are talking about or who is who since everyone looks alike. For example: I ressurected the ghost using 3 candles back on sentinel island and my main character had an option saying something like: "don't you look familiar and do you have a twin sister" and i had no clue what he was talking about. Each maincharacter just doesn't have a personality
Or what is also redicules is people like the slayer trainerwoman/damian who first talks to you in person a bit and later on wants to kill you but apparently doesn't have the time to do so themselves and they run/teleport, leaving you to some low lvl people.

Or maybe its just me playing to much rpg's made by bethesda, bioware, etc and setting the standards to high. Anywho, i'm enjoying the game allthough most of the time its rather easy. The only tricky part is that i'm still unable to beat that damn killerrabit. I have to be carefull with my whirlwind attacks since that rabbit can finish me off in 2 hits and i can't even do half damage to him hahaha
