k..just did and i think i messed up bad. i went on that bandit mission and entered the temple and now am trying to combat the dude but he's so much stronger then me. how bad did i mess it up?

There no rules where you need to do which quest 1st. The temple of doom is just another quest in the game. As long you defeat the bandit leader in the temple, you will get out of the temple in no time.
