Better think of the deal as trading: you trade your item for another. To simply sell, choose your item you wish to sell and then in the merchant's inventory choose the ammount of gold (find the gold in his inventory first <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />). Like Lews suggested, there's 2 small Balance-shaped icons at the top. Use the one on the right, it will add gold from the merchant's inventory to make the deal even.. The one on the right is used if you wish to buy an item: it adds gold from your inventory(if nessaisary).

It's the total cost of every item in your inventory.

In this case: agreeing to the deal would be good, cause this amulet has the same worth as the merchant's gold and helmet together.
The high amount on the char's side represents his items worth in toto, not only his amount of gp - same goes for the merchant/smithy Geoff.
Clicking on the balance scale on either side balances out ONLY in gp (gold coins)

If you still don't understand, Katie = please ask, so I can modify this screenshot. Thank you in advance wave . Spent quite some time puzzling Div-business out.

thanks to Barnie's great patience and a lot of his screenshot experiments wave

It's important to remember that all trades are not fair.Sometimes you get paid less than the items are worth. This builds up your reputation, resulting in lower prices and better deals. It also took me awhile to figure it out.

No, you have to give at least the value. No less. More is good, mostly to improve his attitude towards you and so getting better deals.

Prices go down according to the merchant's attitude towards you or the skill "traders tongue". Same for your items, thses prices go up then.

It's easy enough to get a good attitude. Just let the same merchant (Geoff has the most money (that I've seen)) repair and identify every item you need and sell everything to him. Attitude rises through fair trade, although slower.
