Over the course of two reloads:

First:
using a female warrior at level 14. I went to the barracks to talk to Alix about an escort for the healers. During the subsequent orc attack, I accidentally clicked on a soldier to attack and the rest of the barracks turned against me. So there I was surrounded by orcs and humans, all out for my blood. I managed to kill everyone around me with no potions left. I tried to make my way out of the barracks to hopefully replenish my supplies when I was struck down by the guards and orcs outside.

Second:
I go to Commander Ralph to get the Duke's murderer quest. I'm looking around in the cupboards when I see a book. I click on it and the watch descends on me for stealing. Not liking their attitude, I draw my weapon and fight my way out of the Watch's outpost, killing Ralph in the process. I managed to get out and away before quitting for the night.

I haven't checked my stats but I'm sure my reputation took a hit for that.

Use the control button when there are friendly NPCs around, to target the nearest hostile NPC to your cursor.

Place a container in your inventory, open it and drag and drop items into it. That is not considered stealing, but the first time you remove the items is, so make sure you are alone when you do so.

Save before attempting to steal, etc.

Do you have an invitation to the castle already? Commander Ralph is involved in several quests, so if you have a recent save, I would suggest re-loading.

also...steal only when NOBODY is looking. It saves you a lot of trouble. By the way...don't go into the room to the north in commander ralph's building. It's his quarters and he locks himself in there if you go in and it's hell trying to get him out of there.

Where in the heck is Commander Ralph? I am searching for him to complete one of my incomplete quests and I can't find that guy anywhere. Thanks!

The Watch's house is at the south-east from the castle.
