(Spoilers)

This quest is an escort one, where the chap you discover is too scared of the surrounding monsters (even though he is an expert on the undead apparently) to make his own way back to town.

Thing is, when you agree to escort him he takes off running back to Cyseal, and by running I mean sprinting away in front of you. My characters were barely able to keep up with him as he ran away and couldn't stop him from initiating encounters. I dont even think he was marked on the map either so it was tricky to see where he had run to initially.

Luckily he survived .. however it seem's a bit unexpected that someone so scared would simply run on ahead. Shouldn't escort quests in general revolve around our characters travelling ahead, and having the NPC walk with us (much like a companion would) ?

Nope, this is pretty standard fare for escort quests in games. (This is also why gamers loathe escort quests.)

I guess thats true.. in DDO we used to hate the Escort the Expedition quest with Coyle running ahead. pesky Coyle. I suppose it's no different

In DDO, I STILL hate that quest and all others like it. I let the Archaeologist get himself killed; he deserved it for running off!! smile

If God said it, then that settles it!!

For me, the Archaeologist ran towards enemies too. But the quest log doesn't say that he was killed. If he ran back to the Cyseal, where would he be?

He's in the tavern.

That's the first place I checked. He's not there so I have to assume that's he's either stuck somewhere or he's dead. Though the journal hasn't indicated that he's dead.

Dunno, he's at the tavern in my game. However I did manage to escort him to to the gates, he thanked me and only then ran off to the tavern. Here he is:

And here are the journal entries:

There is a wrong entry about him dying if you don't do his quest right away.

Maybe go and check if he's near the west gate?

Thanks for your help, Aramintai!

Apparently, it's a bug in the quest. I think I found Wulfram and he's lying dead in the forest. Though the quest log did not update.

Speaking of this quest, does anyone think that there should be a third, final encounter before he reaches safety? I dunno, maybe it's just because the Rule of Three is such a thing in culture.

As I said, I might only be thinking about three encounters because it's a cultural pattern.

But I can make an actual gameplay argument in favour of it: The first ambush is you and your partner teaming up against a single enemy. The second ambush is you and your partner against two enemies - one each. It's still easily handleable. A third ambush would be a further step up in difficulty: You and your partner against three enemies, which would make the third encounter further challenging because now you may not have enough manpower to engage all the enemies at once. You would have to think about the third fight a little more, a suitable capstone. It's not really important at all, though.
