I finally beat the cursed abbey today. It wasn't hard at all. We'll, it was originally hard, but I put elemental hail as a skill, and I was owning the competition (it slowed my computer down a bit though), and I put a point into Dread Knight. I don't know why anyone didn't suggest me putting a point into him. The Dread Knight was the only reason I could beat the engineer and he really, really, held his own against him, and took out just as many creatures as I did. Plus, for a character like me who has very little hit points, he can be used as a piece of meat to take the damage from the heavy hitters. In terms of difficulty and point of game, how hard does this part of the game rank, because if it is one of the harder parts, I won't have to worry too much about the rest of the game.

The beast weapon against those steel creatures is Lightning...

At lower character levels (up to about mid teens) the cursed Abbey is one of the more difficult areas. The catacombs can be challenging, but as the game progresses it tends to get easier (with some exceptions).

Lightning did work well against them, but in terms of taking out a large group of them at once, elemental hail was better for me. I also had used lightning, but only for one on one close encounters.

Raze is right, as usual <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
The game gets much easier. Truthfully, I found the catacombs underneath Aleroth to be the hardest place so far. I could only kill a few enemies before having to rest. I am playing a warrior on hard, currently level 37 (I think) and just arrived at the council of seven.

money comes easy in this game. it's XP that's hard to find. so the minor trade off is more than fair. i think XP from giving him his money is more than killing him. can someone verify this?
Edit: sorry i mean that XP is of finite amount.

I thought it was the other way around, more experience for fighting. I paid him, since that seemed like the 'right' thing to do.

Well, I got a lot of experience for killing him. I recieved over 35,000 experience for putting him away, and an additional 42,000 for completing the cursed abbey quest. Plus you recieve 2,000 - 5,000 experience after you defeat each enemy in there, whether it is a Lich or Steel Skeleton, and that tacks on about another 25,000xp, so overall, when I fought him (not counting the quest completion) I recieved about 65K - 80K xp, somewhere in that range.

But paying him gives 2 reputation + XP

I tried both ways.
Fighting gives far more experience than paying him.
You get the +2 Reputation for lifting the curse, so you get it either way.
Paying him is the "right" thing to do, though. It's up to you and your greed which way you go.
