Speaking of Chernobyl (the setting for the game, in the future), when I was in university one of my professors went through the cause of that accident. They turned off safety features so they would not interfere with an experiment a technician was doing (there was no physicist present), ignored a computer warning when things started to go wrong and generally made some very bad decisions along the way. Even after the core melted it would have been contained had water from the cooling system not been dumped on it (don't remember if that was deliberate or automatic/accidental) and the resulting steam blew the roof off.

Afterwards there was an international aid thing set up to bring kids from the area over to North America (at least), and feed them health food, etc to boost their immune systems. Most of those involved received more radiation on the flight over than they did from Chernobyl.

Actually the game is BASED on a story by 2 popular russian writers.
And believe me, the story was written 50 years before Far Cry or Half Life 2.
Very good story. Download "Roadside Picnic" if you're interested.

I said "where the game is based", not on what (but have rephrased that). I just checked a couple screen shots and downloaded the movie preview. It looks good visually, but I'm not really into FPSs.

Yes, Raze you right. I had a good friend of our family, he was military, who went through all this. All this happened thanks to people foolishness and wish to beat some plan (remember Soviet planning system).
And even more Raze. After the meltdown and after the reactor blown up there were even more fatal mistakes done. Hehe, I doubt anyone will tell you this.

1 after explosion they started to cover it with water from helicopters to stop fires. This caused thousands of gallons of steam to occur. That was nr 1 reason for radioactive clouds that reached almost Finland and Norway. (No water is allowed in this cased, only sand)

2 That was a day of huge demonstration in Kiev. No any info on this accident was given out and demonstration not stopped.
(I remember I have got information on what happened from finnish TV news. Finns were crying out that something terrible happened and radiation level in Finland in many times higher than normal)
So, people were not evacuated from region.

3 First 2-3 waves (maybe more) of people taking measures after explosion havent even weared a raspirators - result - all dead.

Some locals didn't leave the region as they had nowhere to go, many died, survivors live there even now.

Just to share info.
Btw, all that including what Raze have written was classified for many years.

I didn't answer your question, Raze
I gave it as a general information as I was sure few people know what the game is based on.
I wonder if Egin knows

I see what you are saying Death. I think, definitely, there will be a parallel to Strugatskis - Roadside Picknick.
Btw, there was a movie made in 1979 after that novel. The name of the movie was Stalker. It was produced by Andrei Tarkovsky.

-The most famous Soviet film-maker since Sergei M. Eisenstein. -IMDB
Tarkovsky biography

You can read about Stalker here. You will see similarities with the game.
Stalker review at IMDB

But, there is deep phylosophical concept and unique atmosphere in the novel, so, it will be just brilliant if game developers succeed in bringing Strugatski idea into the game.

Egin; Thanks for the info. I knew about the delay before releasing any news, but not that they dumped additional water on it.

DATD; I've half read that story, and bookmarked the page.

I have seen more screens for the game and it looks really good. It is kinda sad that the premis is so close to reality. I saw a show on T.V. that talked about and interveiwed people downwind. Not good, many cancers and mutations, retardation, skin burns, and probebly many more dead than they would ever tell the world. It sucks what goverments will do to their own people!
