Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game? Firewalls have also caused conflicts.

Try starting the game directly from the '..\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' program file, by right clicking and running as administrator.

Try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and renaming the 'Divinity Original Sin' subfolder.
This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Deleting or renaming it will get the game to recreate it on startup; playing the game from a different Windows user account would effectively do the same thing.
After that, see if you can start D:OS and create a new profile. If that works, exit the game and move your saves from the renamed folder to the newly created profile's savegames folder.
If the game still crashes on startup, delete the new My Documents D:OS folder and rename the original back again.

Hi, Raze.

Tried both those things, and neither helped.

As for other software, absolutely nothing changed between "working fine for weeks", and "not working at all".

Will read through that thread in detail, though. Thanks for the pointer.

Edit: have now tried everything in that thread, including the clean folder, new resolution and windowed mode.

Nothing allows the game to launch.

Try shutting down other background software anyway, even if there isn't anything set to automatically update, etc.

OK. Was worth a try.

Everything I can shut off is off except Steam. Had to use task manager to kill some processes, but what the heck.

No change.

You could have exited Steam, as well. That shouldn't be necessary, but some people with crashing on startup launching through Steam have been able to start it directly from the executable.

I'll add the troubleshooting things you've tried already to your support email.

Thanks. I also tried it with and without Steam running, both from the desktop shortcut and the executable, and directly launching it from Steam.

Same was happening to me on startup of a fresh install.

In .exe properties I changed the compatibility mode to windows 7 and it worked.

Damn. Tried that just now. No dice.

Running as administrator doesn't help either.

Was hoping today's update might help.

Didn't.

Did you try verifying local files? In the Steam library, right click on Divinity Original Sin and select Properties, switch to the Local Files tab and then click on the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache...' button.

Yeah. Validating Files still does nothing.

I'ma try wiping and downloading from scratch again.

Welp, this worked:
  • Deleted the My Documents folder with profile info.
  • Steam-uninstalled the game.
  • Renamed the SteamApps folder with the remaining customized and mod files to make it install to a new folder.
  • Re-installed.
So now I'm back in.

If I break it again while reloading in the custom and mod files back over, and I can tell what broke it, I'll let you know. Will be backing up the clean install first, believe you me.

Still have no idea why it broke in the middle of ... nothing changing, but computers are awesome-predictable like that.

Thanks for the many suggestions.
