This game got good press but I have stayed away from it since I have heard some negative things about it here and there. I see that it has been patched a few times and I was wondering if the skill balance issues have been worked out. Generally, I heard investing in spells was near useless since you could find spell books allover. Some skills are nearly worthless (the Deathknight one and some others) and others are just ridiculous (heard something about death scorpians you can summon by using an item that run around and ruin game balance). Core balance issues mean alot to me as 1) I dont like picking "overpowered" builds and 2) I dont like the existense of overpowered builds since they marginalize other choices I make for my character. I'd like to give this game a go if these things have been worked out to some degree.

since the latest patch i have not seen any bugs myself. there are a few broken skills. i beleive there are only the crossbow and sheild expertise.

personaly, i love summoning dreadknights and scorpions. dreadknights arent powerful enough to ruin the game at all, and scorpians, well, its not like someone has a gun to your head forcing you to use them. it is your choose and many people choose not to.

you cannot find spellbooks all over. they are extremly rare.

this game is about having fun. if your one of those gamers that take rpgs way too serios then is not for you. however, if you are a person who doesnt mind laughing and having fun once in a while then youll love it.

Hmm, I perfer my RPGs to be more immersive and a bit more serious (like Fallout 1, Arcanum, Wizardry 8, etc). I hate to see that those scorpians are still so unbalanced. Yes, someone isnt forcing me to use them but the fact they exist and so easily undermine the rest of the skillset would probably kill the game for me. Oh well.

I preferd to not use the scorps since ther are pretty powerful to make it more of a challange.

If practice makes perfect, and nobody is perfect, why practice?

Don't let these few concerns let you miss out on a very very good game. I'm pretty sure all the other games that you have played had similar problems/concerns.

Very true, GoldyLocks. I shouldn't lose sight of that.

Arcanum was skewed a bit towards magic. Fallout did reward energy weapon usage a bit much. Certainly, the Wiz 8 fighter and bishop classes were a cut above the rest. Still, none of these imbalances invalidated other classes/builds in the sense that all classes/builds provided a unique form of gameplay that was not exponentially less effective than any other alternative (in the case of Fallout, one handed weapons users could be very effective with a .223 pistol or ripper and were not total crap compared to minigun/energy weapon users; similarly, pacifist or stealth play was well rewarded - as was melee weapon use with a super sledge). I hear scorpians in this game simply decimate the enemy while the player sits about (sounds like playing Dungeon Siege - gameplay that plays the game for you). Well, I guess its been out for a while, so I can go ahead and try it out without having to lose too much dough. I hear the game is fairly free-roaming (I like the sound of that alot), so maybe that will help me look past balance issues. Also, I really like what I see in the screens as far as character/world design goes too (very Ultima-y in some ways - good stuff).

Anywho, thanks for the replies.

@shevek,
is a definatly go .
i never used the scorpions myself. because i played as an warior.
normaly a survvor (thief) characer uses these scorpions a lot more.
But it's only a minor aspect in the whole gameplay.
playing with a "frost" enchanted weopo, could ruin th egameplay also.
but just play the game. realy , that's all what i can say.
