Is there a way to examine an item to see what it's worth before picking it up? I just started playing and I'm enjoying the game but I'm very lost with how things work.

Richt click should do that, or not?

No. Right click just gives me "Pick up" or "Pick up and add to wares". Thanks for answering though.

Turned the game on to test: You need to press halt, then it should show a info box if you go on the highlightened name.
