my vague recollection of 1st game was that thievery was entirely contingent on simply not being seen, but I thought I read somewhere that in this game even if nobody is around some kind of thievery event is logged somehow

so, my question isn't about pickpocketing, or any vendor thievery, but let's say I am upstairs in some mansion with nobody else present, but everything is red --- can I loot or open doors with impunity, or will ppl nab me at some point later on cuz they have security cameras?

In my experience, if you're all alone with no one around, some random person might say something to you later in passing, and that'll be the extent of it.
