Has anyone else found tactical to be very hard, despite it being the mode the game is balanced for (apparantly)? The first dungeon has lots of tough enemies, the ghosts can kill my characters in 2 or 3 hits.

Well I played only the demo. But since that was tactical I had some trouble with ghosts. But after some tries I got the hang of it. Once you know what a ghost has a high resistance against it makes life a bit easier. When I get the full game I'll use the tactical mode. I like a challenge.

I tried to just stay away from the ghosts. They would kill me way too easily. It is hard in tactical, but so far has been doable.

I'm playing on tactical and the best tactic I found was to use the Hero as a archer and the DK as melee, and when the DK get's in trouble back him off. The enemies will chase him but you can still pepper them with arrows. Poison skill is good too since they still take damage while you run away!

I haven't played it yet but here is how I will organize my party

DK will be a mage since his armour depends on his level . If my hero would have been the mage I would have needed to invest in stregth if I wanted to wear better armor.

I am almost through act I in tactical mode. Hard, but not too much. In the start beef up agility at each level up. Skillwise, beef up Damage and accuracy for each character's favourite weapon and you should be ok.

I've managed so far even though i screwed up: Offensive magic sucks so far, my hero mage wannabe has put 4 points into focused elemental missile, but the damage is too low and the mana cost is too high to be worth it. So he's fighting with a weapon instead. If you do not waste skillpoints as I did you should fare even better.

Wow, I'm starting to wonder if I got a different demo than the rest of you. I had little trouble with ghosts, and thought the demo was rather easy. My character with elemental spells did considerable damage to ghosts while DK hacked 'em up. If the demo was actually on tactical mode, it looks ok to me.

The ghosts were toughened up a fair bit between the demo and release.

The ghosts are extremely hard, if you're talking about the 3 near the very start. Their stats are way above what their level would indicate. You should really come back later on to kill them.

I think tactical is pretty tough, especially if you don't go to the Battlefields, but I like it.

I've only played tactical. It was difficult, primarily because you weren't given a clue what lay behind the doors you opened--and in a couple of cases, the challenges were out of proportion for a very young party. That only opened once or twice, however. For the most part, my opponents were tough but killable.

How do the opponents on action compare to tactical?

I have no problem playing on tactical. I am even killinh the DK patrols on the upper levels from the citadel AND I even haven't used all my skill point (12 skill points free).

Now I must admit I had a little problem with fergus in the beginning but I ran back and forth (even went back to my begin cell). While my warrior was luring furgus away my DK hit him with all arrows. It took a time but he's dead. Same with the DK patrols. Used sneak moved back form the DK and then hit him with 50 spirutial arrow. Sneal is a real cool skill but I don't use it as sneak but as sneak archer. The archer quickly move back when he hits the DK so thay don't see him. How tactical from me

Oddly enough, Fergus wasn't the slightest problem. I just had my two characters pound him and consume healing potions in the process. Focusing on a single opponent made things much easier.

The DK patrols were more problematic, because I assumed 1-handed slashing skill was identical to 1-handed slashing with a shield--that skill didn't show up until significantly *after* I'd found a nice strength +1 shield. As a result, my DK wasn't getting any of the bonuses he should have, and I was wondering why the battles were so tough!

I suspect action level might be too easy, but the gradient of difficulty has never been established, here. Sooner or later, I'm sure somebody is going to do a comparison of hitpoints per monster per difficulty level--probably in Excel.

I'm in tactical and it doesn't appear too hard. Once I could, I immediately went to the battlefield and finished level one. The death knight patrols were pieces of cake when I got back.

BTW, my DK is 2-hand slash w/ heal, main character is survivor-bow. DK has good constitution, resists, and str, so minor heals keep him alive in all sorts of battles.

And I'd like to point out there are ffaarrrr too many regular arrows. My survivor right now has maybe 7000, and the weight is locked at 13... kinda cheap.

I suspect that's for conversion purposes, though are you sure about 7000...? That seems, er, rather high.

Any in any case, the weight's a little ridiculous for arrows. Hey, maybe those ridiculously heavy amulets we've been finding since the 1.42 patch are where all the arrow weight has gone!

Not boasting, but I am through act 2, and I am finding Tactical too easy.

It all depends on the character build I guess.

I will be starting on Hardcore as soon as that mess about skillpoints get sorted out.

It depends on the person really. My friend and I are playing on tactical, he is saying it is way to hard. I think it is fairly difficult.

What i've noticed is strategic use of stat enchancing items really helps. As does resting as much as possible as opposed to using potions. The Battlefields are also essential if you want to do well early on.

I'd say the game is balanced for Tactical. You're not meant to be able to win every fight! You're supposed to think your way around the ones that are too tough. Like with the ghosts, you can use the mini-map to listen through the doors and find out where the baddies are.

Factually, this is accurate. The game is balanced that way, since it's the default recommended by the developers. That said, there are a couple of times (notably the ghosts, towards the beginning) where you have to wonder why opponents just about impossible to kill on the tactical level at that point were placed in the very early game. -But still, that only happens once or twice.

I guess I'd say, if you enjoy strategic RPGs, where you stop to command your troops and assess opponents, tactical's the way to go. If you prefer swinging that sword, lopping heads and thinking about nothing else, consider action.
