Instead of having to pick a different party member to initiate a chat and only use that character's stats, why not just group all characters together for dialogue checks? IE: Persuasion check, if the cleric has a better bonus while your main character is talking, just go off the cleric's as a group check since technically all your party members are there anyways. Make them group dialogues, it'll be far less annoying when reloading trying to pass those checks without having to change the active character before the dialogue.

It should definitely be the dang group. That is how DnD works. We should not have to gamble the one talking will be the one good at perception or whatever.

And major talks should drag people in regardless of what they are doing.

agreed, in 5e tabletop if all the players are in the same dialogue and the DM has them roll a check, everyone is usually involved and someone may end up "helping" those more proficient instead of rolling for themselves. But regardless, the one with the best chance is still rolling anyways and it should be the same way in the game.
