Did a search and couldn't find this topic, so I'll start off. Just saw a couple of game shows covering E3 and footage from some upcoming RPG's.

Looks like XBox has 3 great ones upcoming. Fable, Sudeki, and BioWare's Jade Empire. I believe the latter will be on the PC also. The videos of Fable and Jade Empire, for some reason look a lot like Morrowind, updated, but very similar.

There's a new Zelda coming for the Gamecube, and that little green man, Link, is now grown up. It is a darker game from what I could tell.

For the PC, BioWare is coming out with (trying to recall) Dragon Age, or something like that. Looks like a questing party will be coming back in vogue. Also, Dungeon Lords looks pretty impressive.

How could I forget KotoR II. I played the game on both the XBox and PC. Also forgot to mention that incredible Final Fantasy XII for PS2. I have never seen graphics like that ever!

I caught a few minutes of E3 on the Tech channel last night (and promptly fell asleep which is not a testament to the quality of the event but rather the state of the viewer) so I didn't get to see much. Anyway, I've been looking forward to Sierra's release of The Bard's Tale (which is for the XBox, I believe) and Peter Molyneux's RPG, Fable. And Fuff, I think you're right. Fable looks like it may be along the lines of Bethesda's TES series (Morrowind). I haven't come across any reviews or articles about Jade Empire but will do an internet search** to see what I can learn. **Here is Bioware's site for Jade Empire

I think it was about 4 years ago I stumbled across a game called "Daggerfall". It was an expensive game (by my standards) at the time it was released but I figured "what the heck, it's only money," so I bought it. Daggerfall was vastly different from any other game I had ever played and immediately fell in love with the concept. Since that time, I've been an avid fan of Bethesda's RPGs which mainly have been "sequels" to The Elder Scrolls (TES). I later found out that Daggerfall was the 2nd in the series. "Arena" was the first. Redguard (which I was a beta tester for), is the third and of course, the fourth, Morrowind (my all-time favorite RPG in that particular genre) along with the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansion packs. Many developers have tried to emulate TES' format, but none come close to Morrowind's depth. Although I haven't played Knights of the Old Republic so my opinion may change one of these days.

But getting back to E3. I've never been to any of the game developer's conferences (only to food technology conferences. What a wild bunch they are. I mean, come on! How much more can be done with a chicken??? <--------- just kidding).

Bioware's Dragon Age is still in production as is Jade Empire. Both are games I'm looking forward to taking a look at as they approach their release date.

I took a look at the Tech channel's line up to see if they would be broadcasting anymore from E3 today but couldn't find anything. Is today the last day? Or does E3 run until tomorrow? One of these years I'm going to attend a gaming conference. I know that's something I'd enjoy.

And it's true confessions time. I have never played any of the "Zelda" games. *cowers in the corner* I know! I *should* be shot! (LOL)

Great discussion!

I want to have Fable, it seems an awesome game. But first I need an Xbox.

There are some pretty decent bundles on the market if you want to get an XBox. In addition, the price has been cut. I live in the US and have found some great deals both on and offline.

I've been toying with the idea of buying PS2 or GameBoy Advanced SP (or both). Seems just when I'm ready to buy one or the other, I back off and wait for another goodie that I might like to have (i.e., new computer strictly for gaming like Alien Ware). Besides, I've got enough computers, pocket PCs, PDAs and peripherals to open a small warehouse! LOL (Well, it's not that bad, but it's getting there).

I love the age we live in - so many goodies and too little time.

P.S. I am definitely buying Fable. I think its release date is Sept. 2004. Just in time for my birthday!?!

Ah, Daggerfall. I wrote the official strat guide for the game. You were a tester for Redguard. I wrote the Redguard strat guide too. BTW, Bethesda has now released Arena as freeware. It's a 9 meg download, and I fooled with it the other night. Lots of un.

"And it's true confessions time. I have never played any of the "Zelda" games. *cowers in the corner* I know! I *should* be shot! (LOL)"

Neither had I under a recent jag over the last 2 years of buying any console with 3 decent rpg's. I play the games and sell everything on eBay. That way, gaming is practically free. My next console will be the XBox because of Sudeki, Fable, Jade Empire, and the most addictive non-rpg ever Halo and Halo 2.

I had never played a Zelda either. In my Gamecube period last year, I played the Windwaker. It was terrific.

"Great discussion!"

I agree.

As for XBox prices, just returned from an EB Games. They're selling refurbished but warranted Xboxes for $99 after a rebate. Same goes for PS2. I would have mentioned this to the prior poster, but I noticed Belgium is the locale, and I believe machines released for Europe are different than here in the U.S. If not, and if he/she happens to read this, check it out.

Yep, I was a beta tester for Redguard. That was a fiasco because they were so far behind schedule. We couldn't get very far along in the game before it would crash to our desktop. There are some games that are fun to test. Redguard wasn't one of them. But, I do like the game. The testers got free copies of it.

And speaking of strategy guides - how impressive, Fuff! You wrote the one for Daggerfall and Redguard? My poor Daggerfall strategy guide is barely holding itself together because I used it so much. My copy of the strat guide for The Morrowind Prophecies isn't nearly as beaten up. (Btw, great job on getting all of that information into an easy-to-understand volume). And believe it or not, I actually enjoy reading strat guides as they have been an unexpected resource in helping me create part of the magic system for the IF game I'm creating. Btw, how does one go about writing a strategy guide for a game as massive as Daggerfall? That must have been some undertaking!

I bought my XBox 1.5 years ago and love it. The only reason I bought it was so I could play Morrowind. At the time, my PC didn't quite meet the specs required for the game. And I knew it was going to be at least 6 months to a year before I could buy a new PC. There was *no way* I was going to wait that long to play Morrowind. So, I upgraded the memory in my pc from 128 to 256 MB of RAM. I installed it (all by myself ----------> extremely proud of that feat) but my processor still wasn't powerful enough. So, the XBox fit my budget at the time and fulfilled my burning desire to play Morrowind. Six months later I got a new computer. So now I have some of my favorite games in both PC and XBox form. I have no kids and live alone so my home is a mini-Disney World for my teenaged nieces and nephews. I even got my nephew (who is a sports maniac) interested in playing the old text adventure games. He loves Colossal Cave and I think he beat it in less time than I did the first time around back in the early 1980's.

Yep, I don't know if the games differ in Belgium either. There are some great prices now for new XBox, Game Cube and PS2. I bought 2 refurbished PS2s for my nieces and nephews 1.5 years ago. (I bought one for each family) and they never had a problem with them even though they were refurbished. I think I paid $179 each (no games included - bought those separately). $99 is an excellent price. I may just go ahead and splurge. It's only money, right?

P.S. Never played Halo. Hmmmm, addicting you say? Oh, and thanks for the info on Arena.

I remember it well.

"My poor Daggerfall strategy guide is barely holding itself together because I used it so much."

Appreciate the kind words. If it's mailable and you want, send it to me and I'll autgraph it and put in an inscription. When I die, it will be worth $1 more. Ha.... Speaking of strat guide value, one of my books the official strat guide for Xenogears goes for over $100 at many booksellers. Yikes!!

"Btw, how does one go about writing a strategy guide for a game as massive as Daggerfall?"

When you write an official guide, you have access to all the data for the game in readable format, like item lists and locations, etc. You simply have to play the game "to death". If you miss something, the game's creators always let you know and set you straight. Daggerfall was a tough book to write because it was not finished when I wrote it.

Because I can read Japanese, and many RPG's for consoles originate in Japan, I became a valuable asset, as I could play the game and write the book from the Japanese version even before the game had been localized. This meant the strat guide and game would come out together, considered by developers a good thing. And, that way, you have a complete working copy of the game. I never thought a couple of weeks out of my life to learn a bit of Japanese would become so handy.

"I bought my XBox 1.5 years ago and love it."

I bought and played the XBox to play Morrowind also. What a bonus when Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic came out. BTW, did you get suckered into buying some of the worst rpg's ever like Metal Dungeon?

""my home is a mini-Disney World for my teenaged nieces and nephews."

Many years ago, when only the Apple II was around for serious gaming, there was a cute game called Droll. Whenever my niece and nephew slept over, they played it all night.

"Never played Halo. Hmmmm, addicting you say?"

Halo launched almost simultaneously with the XBox. It still commands fairly premium prices, even on eBay, years after its release. Though I am terrible at FPS games, I went through the entire game on Easy, and couldn't get out of the first screen on Normal. Definitely a game to play.

Maybe that's the reason why Microsoft bought the developing company ?

I have nothing against M$ as far as producing goes. Developers under their [huge] wing have had nothing but the most of both time and monetary resources, and that almost always spells good games.

Halo, however, was a good game. Just a good game. It wasn't the damned second coming of Christ everybody thought it was. It was a straight-played by-the-books generic shooter. However, all people saw were the 1534 layers of polish it had. (NOT the pc version, that had -453 polish.)

Far Cry tried to do that damn checkpoint save system, and that immediately turns me off a game.

Anyways, all the reviews I read spoke of some super amazing awesome enemy AI, and I failed to see anything different from every other game. And I really didn't like being *sniped* by a guy 1000 yards away with a rocket launcher.

Other than that, yeah I guess it's a pretty good game. Sad multiplayer, though. Had some definite potential.
