When you surprise attack Ethel in her lair with a summoned creature (before the cinematic scene next to the coundrel/mirror/petrified person) she only attacks the creature and never comes up to attack your party. She is easy pickings with ranged attacks and is only level 1. Is this a bug or a feature?:P

Sounds like a bug.

Also before the final Ethel fight, if you sneak up to the control panel and lower the cage, you can rescue the girl. However she just stands there and you cant talk to her. The fight also doesn't initiate anymore and the story is stuck.
(she also doesnt disappear if you kill her by surprise)

If you lowered the cage the girl is stuck until you kill the hag, which (IF still alive) is usually hiding invisible on the wooden plank near the control orb.
I guess there was supposed to be some script triggering the encounter there, but sometimes it freeze so you have to brute force its start by casting an AOE in that area.

After the hag dies the girl becomes responsive again and the quest can progress to its conclusion.
