I've been messing around with pick pocket on merchants. It seems, for me, that pick pocket will only work once per skill level, per merchant. I'll increase the skill level, pick pocket one item from merchants, and subsequently be unable to pick any other items off that merchant. The process repeats itself for other merchants.

If I then spend another point to train pick pocket further, I can steal another item, but only one more item... Am I doing something wrong? Is this bugged? I'm using the latest patch release.

Thanks

Hm, I could steal gold and then 1 item, depending on the item lvl. You see, you have to take care of 2 things:
Level of merchant + level of item.
At pickpocket lvl 2 I could steal gold + 2 items of a low level. I needed lvl 2 to get my hands on splitting arrows (lvl 1 didn't work).

If you mean BF => you can steal up to your max lvl per act. So, if you change acts, you can steal again. I wasn't greedy, just looked into the trade window and decided if/what I wanted to steal.

Sadly, the pickpocket fun was lowered due to patch versions (Larians have no heart for thieves <sniff> )

Let's say you find something very very useful for yourself and are at low level. => max out your pickpocket lvl - loot and then unlearn this skill. But I'd only do this for very precious stuff - depending on your char level, this can be quite expensive

Oh, and if you're playing 1.44 => holy water can't be stolen anymore

That explains it; I was trying to pick pocket BF merchants repeatedly; I wasn't aware there was some sort of cumulative limit on what you can steal (in the end, I couldn't even pilfer a piece of fruit ) Well, that certainly limits the usefullness of this skill, hehe

Thanks for the quick reply, Kiya!

Yes, it does - but it doesn't pay to be greedy - just concentrate on the really good stuff - if it doesn't work - save, try out a higher pickpocket lvl. And move your mouse patiently, until you catch the good stuff (mostly underneath). I spend quite some time, trying to find out what I want to take.

And money is always a good investion... they restock that. Just take large sums. A master thief has to be picky <sob... kicking a stone and pouting>

If you don't mind bugs in older versions => I can only talk from German version 1.1 (your unpatched version?) - It was a heaven for thieves - even quest items could be stolen, keys etc. I don't know about 1.32 in your case. I started the English version with 1.40 - and if you are content with 1.43 => heheh, holy water could be stolen

The pickpocket skill remains very useful, even with this limit, but now you have to really think about what you're gonna steal, and be more strategic.

For instance: Buy an item(s) you want from a merchant, it doesn't matter how expensive it is, as long as you can afford it with gold.
Then have all your items repaired and identified.
Then, steal back all the gold.

Tadam! It only counts as one steal. And you got all your money back.

{sigh} I went to one of the Imp Merchants in the Imp Village and he had the best Armor I have ever seen in the game - AC=13, nice attributes and 3 Charm slots. I exited his trade menu put another point in Pickpocket and his items had all changed... no more armor

Should have just bought it
