after the latest patch anytime I try to start a new character, I am presented with four dummies standing naked on a square in a grassy field,

Is there some remedy to this?

Patch 3 saves are not compatible with patch 4, the easiest way around this is to make a new profile and create you new characters in it.

If you use mods, disable them and erase the files.
