I don't think many had doubts about the fact that they are "doing something".
What they are doing and in what direction they are going was always the question.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

It comes off honestly as just saying something to avoid providing news when they announce a new release in at e3 assuming that even happens and its one class no other news or like 4 magical items not going to be impressed or I have no positive outlook to that as 1 class every 4 months does not really cut it. When you consider that the competition WOTR releases 5 classes and 10 classes in the same time length as well as other content. Its like a drastic different in game content release when you look at modders when the game came out were releasing more stuff than the development team. Just not at 5 star quality the balance just doesnt break even. For me to be impressed id have to see E3 with something like:
- 2-3 Classes
- 2-3 New Companions
- 2-3 Races
- 70+ items
- 2 New Zones
- Level Cap increased to between 6-8.
- Big Improvements to character generator (Inc More than 2 voices / More Faces / Height/Weight Adjustments to character design).
- Stat Rolling
- Options for starting Equipment

It would take like a bunch of stuff released in one patch to make me even mildly like that was ok. They are just not efficient it comes off as they are more focused on what they are going to do after bg3 or diverting to another project instead of finishing the project they originally set out on it not only looks bad on them taking so long for so little content in a patch but it looks bad on wotc who is releasing full add ons to 5E dnd play at twice they rate they are adding small things to bg3. It just comes off as lack luster. Despite the games obvious potential to be alot bigger than what they have started with and have the potential to make the game. Honestly if they were releasing content at a good pace they could be working on DLC content which they could probably make a ton off as well. Just adding additional races classes small adventure zones // Items Adventures. Subclasses they could basically probably get 3-4 years of DLC content out of BG 3 easily even more. But if they keep releasing content so slow the content will grow stale there wont be any player base for it even at the full release because people come back and visit it at a much later time instead of being glued to it and if the player base doesnt stick the dlc wont sell well enough to make the game keep training. When you read the articles and reviews now they are saying when is there going to be new content. That tells you even the critics have noticed that the content coming out is abnormally slow for EA/Beta releases of games. First time 4-5 months for one class could be written off as they were trying to improve load times second time being 4 months and no new content yet it just looks bad when you say hey heres 1 class. I dont mean to knock on it because I think the game has so much potential but it just feels like they are not putting in the effort they originally gave the impression they would which is dissappointing.

Is all this expansion in workforce a sign that they underestimated the scale and nature of taking on the job of developing BG3?

That’s a genuine question, not a dig.

Thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned also that prior to the last live stream I think there was talk was of an expansion in workforce too.

Interesting quote. Hopefully these extra developers can help in toning down the over proliferation of cutscenes haha!

What is point of this information? O_o
Unless we expect developers to close their notebooks, and go start building new headquarters to Barcelona ... i dont see how is this relevant for us. laugh

This isn't anything to do with the new studio. We have several ongoing discussions about news updates and new content; please use one of them.

Starting work now is a smart investment, especially if they are concerned about the revenue stream being able to support long term development. Although Nintendo doesn't allow EA games so they won't see profit until they have a finished product, but obviously it helps to have a studio whose work they trust.

So no onboarding, no getting people up to speed. This actually offloads a lot of work to specialists who can likely do it a lot faster.

I think I read somewhere that the point of the Barcelona studio is to port their games and updates to other systems, thereby freeing up resources and manpower. Since one of the main studios doesn't have to work on that, they can focus on the development for the game which means that once everything gets into a flow, I posit updates will come out faster and with more changes/content. Porting can really slow things down sometimes.

That said, it does explain why there has been, well, radio silence on what is going on since opening a new studio is likely a logistical nightmare, but in the long-run, not just for beyond BG3 but likely for BG3 as well, I think this will turn out to be something good, or at least I hope it will.

Or it could be a total over-reach and they've gotten ahead of themselves - wouldn't be the first time a company has gone bankrupt by expanding too fast and purchasing costly assets.

They are too busy working on pretty face cinematics rather than more content. I swear, these CINEMATIC DIALOGUES will be the nail in the coffin by the end. Its a nightmare to get right. Would not be surprised if they opened a new studio just for that.
As I predicted on the first week playing the game in 2020 , Its already a meme hive on youtube... It drags the whole game down. It ages badly. We get less class content, less areas, less npcs, less D&D, less dialogues options....less of everything to have that AAA cinematic experience.
If we did not have these , we would be at 20 classes, 5 player roster, 15 companions, day/night cycles, a quick ass UI, a bazilion dialogue/story options, tactical AND real time with pause combat, and 100 spells to boot already. But right now we have NOthING CONCReTE on game content. How many classes? Well uuh, like the D&D books...kinda. How many companions? Well uuuh, around 6, 7 maybe 8 ....How many levels? 10...uuh maybe 12....
