I never liked BG1 because I never understood its rules set.
Only those who understood it could have fun with it, I think now, and now, 30 years later, when I'm finally understanding most of its rules set, I *might* be able to get past the first few 1 or 2 towns ...

When you find a big kettle of crazy, it's best not to stir it.

I am the opposite. I liked BG1&2 combat far more when I didn't get it. It was intuitive and forgiving enough to not require understanding of the mechanics (unlike Kingmaker lets say, which will murder uninitiated at every opportunity), while the obfuscation of the mechanics gave it illusion of depth and a feeling of wonder.

I was less impressed by gameplay side of it when I replayed it couple years back, and actually dug into mechnanics.
