Is it Sci-Fi, Fantasy? What? Just a brief, or I guess long, explanation please? Anything like Divine Divinity? I love that game!

It is set 20 years after Divinity, in the same universe. See the Riftrunner FAQ and the interviews listed in the Announcements forum.

If you had said "basically the same engine", you had been right. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

@rugster,
if you read more of the intervieuws and the forum,
you will realise that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> isn't the same game as <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />

there are lots of improvements and a new skill system.
complete unique sets, and a better item generator engine.
to say a few...

it WILL be fun

erm.. thats what they said about diablo 2 and the 2nd version of almost every game ever.. but from what i've seen of the screenshots and yeh i know they early shots and nothing has been polished.. but it looks to me like the same game with a few improvements.. abit like buying civ2 or civ3 or settlers2 or settlers3 or settlers4 or any of the mircosoft games after age of empires..they're all the same game, just slightly different settings, graphics and ideas..

What i'd prefer is completely new with only some very basics carried over from before...i dont want a UFO2 which is exactly the same game as UFO-Enemy Unknown, but with different graphics.

Instead of waiting possibly years to release a new game, with a new engine, our Larians have used the same engine as in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> uses a 3D upgrade to the <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> engine. It was already set up and just needed some fine tuning. Many of the improvements that are implemented in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" />, come from these fine forum members. Our Larians have been kind enough to read and listen, and expand the <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> Universe for their fans. All of the bad issues that were discovered in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> have been adressed and hopefully corrected in this new game. Granted there are some elements of the game that pertain to the original <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />,but from what I hear, thats as far as it goes. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> is a stand alone game, not an expansion. We (The Powerfully Insane Fanbase)did not want to wait for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> 2 to be released with a new engine! We want our game now! (Demo Lars...Please? Hint, hint) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/alien.gif" alt="" />

why fix it if it ain't broke? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

of course we won't like repetitions but one sequel (riftrunner isn't a true sequel but a fulfilment of fans requests) will be just nice.

So you'd prefer RiftRunner to be a FPS or RTS? Sequals have to have similarity to the predecessors, otherwise they'd be too inaccessable.

Descent 3, while still a FPS in the same style as Descent 1 & 2, was still a vastly different game because of the new features added: namely missions (other than "Destroy the Reactor") and scripted objects. I tend to prefer sequals (at least the first sequal) over the original because it fixes all of the gameplay problems that were uncovered in the first. Dungeon Keeper 2 is a good example.

But you're also right that they can be too similar. Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 looks and plays the same as the original. Sim City's improvements are very internal and it still seems to play the same. Doom 2 was a stand-alone expansion pack.

The aim of Larian should be to:
  • Remove the bugs.
  • Improve and expand the story.
  • "Revolutionise" at least part of the gameplay.
  • Make money so that they may make more games for us.

It should tide us over until Divine Divinity 2. That's the way I see it, anyway.

Well, here's an idea, why don't you actually play a different game that has nothing to do with Divine Divinity or its engine? There are hundreds of games out there, just pick one that you like <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
