I keep reading posts that say that you shouldn't increase your intelligence and/or stamina becuase you will later use charms to boost your mana and health. However, it's my understanding that charms are "one-time" items and that after you put them into an item you can't remove them. Is it just me, or does this represent a problem? What if you find a better item 5 min. after you have enchanted your weapon? If you use this new weapon/armor, then your charm is wasted and your mana and health are then in jeapordy. Perhaps I am missing something here - could you guys clarify the situation for me please?

If you want to be a mage, put points into mana. You're a mage, for crying out loud. Mana and vitality, and just enough strength to wear your equipment. And dexterity? Bah...
As far as the question of losing your charms when you change equipment...well, when you start out, you have low quality equipment, and low quality charms to go in the equipment as well. As the game progresses, you find higher quality items that you'll want to start using, but you'll also find better and better charms to use. It's not perfectly balanced, but it shouldn't pose a quandry as to when or when not to use charms. They're meant to augment your stats, not be the sole source of them.
If you wouldn't mind, point me to the posts where you're reading that you should only use charms to gain mana, stamina, etc.. I'd like to know who I'm disputing.

As a warrior, I relied pretty much exclusively on intelligence and mana bonuses on equipment for my mana (didn't use charms, and only ever put 1 stat point into intelligence). As a mage, though, I would put points into intelligence (at least at the start of the game).

Several NPCs can sell silver charms, so when you change equipment it would not be too hard to replace the lost charms. The bigger problem is putting lower quality charms into something you end up keeping a long time. If you don't need a certain boost, it would be a good idea to keep a couple free charm slots, to use for gold charms late in the game.

What if...

I've learnt, in most aspects of life, that this is a pointless question. All it does it stop you doing anything at all! So you lose a couple of charms in a piece of equipment. You shouldn't be relying on them for survival, they should be an assistance. Take a chance! Use lesser charms for now and save the larger ones for when you have better equipment. You could save them all to the end of the game, then they'd benefit you for a whole one fight. What would be the point of them then?

You shouldn't rely on your weapon for charm slots, you should look for that mainly in jewelry and armor pieces. It's not hard at all to get 2 rings and an amulet with 5 charm slots each! Actually you pretty much have the amulet guaranteed especially if you're a mage, because you can get it from the Nobleman's quest since you have no use for a dagger or a sword. You also find "Amulet of glory" on your way to save Mardaneus, which can have 5 slots if you're lucky (or if you reload a few times). And you also get a nice ring from Verlat, and so on and so forth, you get the point.
The "what if I find a better item and waste my charm" problem is resolved by using charms with items of corresponding quality. Early on you put low quality charms in "low quality" items (like the armor from George's armor display, for example, you can put blue charms in it - the orcs around Aleroth drop blue charms). Then as you get up in level and start finding better items, you'll also find better charms (Kistandalius sells white charms all the time), so you'll put those better charms in the better items, and ditch the old inferior stuff without thinking twice about it.
While doing this you should keep in mind that it will rain gold charms in the wastelands, so you should save your best stuff for the wastelands (like Pieces from the Dragon Armor, or whatever you think deserves gold charms in it).

if your worried about running low on charms, go to the orc camp(bottom right corner) let loose about 12 scorps (using deadly gift) and you should get alota charm drops (Medium to Very Large) or, if you do not like to use scorps go down there VERY carefully killing carefully along the way. i went down there and killed lots o orcs, and found loadsa charms. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

Only used charms at the end (Medium charms are so totally waste of charm slots )
But as is said the charms should be only a bit off support. And there is enough charms to go around specially in the wastelands

Charms should be "replacable" when you get a better charm.... maybe they will be in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" />

That's not bad. Only let the player upgrade a charm with one the provides the same type of bonus (eg. Constitution, etc.). It makes a bit of a compromise with the rigid charm system.

After beating the game I went back to a save just before Josephine and removed most of my equipment and the game was still easy even without all those charms.

I don't recall the stats; haven't played it in awhile. This was an archer and I had heavily invested points in agility, some in strength and none in intelligence.

Charms are very helpful, making the game VERY EASY if you ask me!
The BEST charms are those that give VITALITY/MANA BONUS(NOT CONSITTUTION OR INTELLIGENCE) because even if you have a Medium charm(RED ONE) it gives you +60 which is equal to putting a very large charm(gold) with Constitution bonus(if you are a warrior 10pointsx6=60)

So...i suppose you should rely on CHARMS a lot if you want the game to be easier!(DO NOT WASTE many POINTS on Intelligence or Constitution, add to Strentgh so you can carry more&dexternity so monsters can't hit you easily!)

If you are a mage put some points to Intelligence at the beggining but that's all,i believe...

All this is my opinion so...don't yell at me....JEZUS <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shhh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
