Another thing: we've got 48 hrs time limit on editing - so even if a controversial post/topic is deleted or modified by the poster, the graphical display will remain - a sort of stigma.

There is one good expression in Russian:
The word is not a bird, if it flies away there is no chance to catch it.

And I highly disagree that a certain amount of posts makes a member here inevitably "respected". Quantity is not quality IMO.

Absolutely, but if I say something stupid, or act offencive I will get "-" points from those who have 8 or more stars. If I continue to act in this way I will end up with lamb status. Isn't this a quality?

Please, keep this in mind: A community is a group, determing group pressure, dynamics. So, howling with the croud would not make me respectable IMO. Uttering a different (singular) opinion and defending it is freedom of thoughts/speech... [color:"yellow"]Edit: IF not intended as a personal attack, of course[/color] - I fear rating would cramp this.

Agreed, even a kitchen knife can be used for murder. Well, let's hope that those who have the right to rate the others will not rate those of different views/opinions. This is an ethical part, I honestly don't see problems with it here on this forum.

If I knew an antidote helping against spam/trolling... I'd propagate it - I don't consider a graphic display or additional tiny icons would be one.

And if it is? Kiya, I donno either, that's why we discuss it.

I am not agitating anyone to take or not to take this system. If you think it is not worth it then let us just forget it.

Nope, I disagree on forgetting just like that - I do think respect culture is important, Egin <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> . Maybe one will come up with another creative idea due to this discussion? Sadly, my own fantasy only goes into the restrictive direction - counterproductive IMO <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> .

But why lambs? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" /> - they're so cute...

I too disagree with the rating. It would create upper-class citizen and second rate citizens of the board.

Personally, most of the time I tend not to pay much attention to the left column of topics.

I am just interested in 2 things in the left column :
- The number of posts. To know if the person is a new member and to tell him/her "Welcome".
- The location.

I don't care about the titles.

actually the ideea is good but the system that engin suggested isn't that well set up...

it still needs some work...but I'm not in a very imaginative mood right now... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

I put my vote on the NO side. The main thing i use the left hand collum for is the avatars and the name of the forum member. IMHO everything else does not matter.

~Beleive me, you will be the last one ending up with lamb sign~

.. which immediately illustrates why we don't do this. Anything that opens the door to politics, or encourages polarization, pretty much goes out the window without any discussion. I'll let the thread open for now in case you want to discuss alternatives, but I don't really see how you can add any sort of peer-based coolness factor without potential for trouble down the road.

I don't think I understand what you are saying Rat.
As for jvb, yes I have seen his posts many times, and I have never seen any abuse or spamming incoming from him, always friendly and polite, at least towards me, so that is why I have written :
*Beleive me, you will be the last one ending up with lamb sign*
No politics, no encouraged polarization, closed communities, finally elite levels, or any other hierarchy, if this is what you were saying.

But thinking about alternatives, hmm, important is what is desired to achieve. If spam or not polite behaviour is our worst enemy, here is just another idea to create a:

NB posts or Hall of Fame
and
Spam, [nocando], shame, (name it accordingly) list of posts

where once a week, or once a month the best and the worst posts are placed.

Does it make sence?

@ Egin
I don't agree with your idea. Nobody deserves to be pointed out with shame.
When i arrived in this forum, one member did not respect the rules (too much spam).
Someone opened a thread against this member and a lot of people wrote unfriendly things about the "bad member" in this thread, some of them just laughed at him.
I did not know this person but i felt very bad for him and i sent him a PM.

When someone has a bad behaviour the moderators always do the right thing and the person stops to be not polite or goes away.

As for me I know that most of my posts are not informative but I like to post things that make other peole laugh and improve the atmosfere of this already great forum. A respect meter would be a good idea IMHO.

Morbo said it good for me, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" /> although i do try and help in the ones i can

and on further thought...
...the only other alternative we have is ourselves, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" /> yay or nay? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

i agree we don't need any added special spam security...
most of us here already are of sound mind <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> or at least close to that,
and it's not all that difficult to "weed" out the offending, obnoxious ones,
Which thankfully are not very often or very many,
and if all else fails we always have our fearless moderators

to "excise the tumor(s)" if need be! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />

Egin's suggestion:
Yep, it's a bit medieval => being tied to the stocks, waiting for flung rotten tomatoes or jeers.(Hall of Fame/Spam)

There ARE rules of conduct we sign by registration - they could be a mighty instrument if used - this goes to the mods.

Kiya is right and we as forum members have an obligation to help the mods by reporting infractions of these rules to them. We have all gotten caught up in the throws of bad conduct one way or another. When we see someone out right cause offense to another we need to try and stay out of it and report it to the mods instead.

Yep, you right.
But ...I like what Kiya is saying, medieval, yes, make it medieval and publicly execute any spammer we come across <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/evilgrin1.gif" alt="" />

(Egin is looking for his red executor's robe while his Axe of Ultimate Justice is being sharpened) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" />

PS Sorry, was very sleepy this morning, pressed quote instead of edit my own post and created double post, therefore had to delete it.

We were troubled with spammers at RPGDot also. The problem has been and is solved by tight moderation, a warning system and decreasing the postcount of the spammer. Especially the last option does miracles.
