Oh joy, another pseudo-sequel Diablo clone with dated graphics and the same issues as the original.

I played the original DD... some people here might remember me...

The biggest issues were... lousy dated graphics and asinine navigation and combat. The most complaints about the new one? Asinine navigation and combat. Lousy dated graphics are self-evident from the screenshot.

On top of that, your "companion" is brain-dead. Instead of worrying about one character (that is likely to run in the opposite direction from the click), you now have to worry about two. I'm just DYING to try it.

And I'm almost willing to bet that Larian used the same fairy to voice the male mage as they did in the first DD.

Sit this one out, get Sacred if you've got Diablo 3 jones...

I KNOW the Sacredcommunity, and what makes me constantly SICK is that players are STAMPING it an D2-clone without letting it be a game in itself !

It seems to me as if certain players have a stronge urge to put everything into categories, drawers, whatelse, no matter how fitting this is or not.

It makes me sick and sad that people are painstakingly accurate in not allowing Sacred to be a different game than D2, but instead mark it as a simple Clone ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion of course...but it's interesting to see how he tries to compare the basic gameplay of Diablo to the interactive world of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> with it's grand story line and interesting quests etc.

Perhaps yes if you do have a Diablo fetish get Scared (not that Scared is bad...meant to be good in it's own right), but if you like your games more involved and require more thought than bash bash bash on the mouse button get <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> !

If all you're worried about is how good the graphics are on your game then clearly you should stick to your FPS'ers and all that...

Oh wait..aren't they all the same games with different graphics?

How come no thinks that any other FPS shooter game is a CLONE of Doom?! When all they ever say is any isometric rgp hack slash game is nothing more than a diablo clone?!?!

I don't get it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

Diablo was good in it's day but it's pond scum now to the divinity engine!

Damar Stiehl ...well, well. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" /> Didn't see you for quite some time anymore. But apparently your habit hasn't changed much since then.

For god sakes, what ISN'T a clone of a precedenting game these days? Well I'll tell you what, Far Cry is nothing but a clone of Wolfenstein, if you wan't to play some ORIGINAL first person shooting then play Wolfenstein instead of that Far Cry crap! Oh and while we are at it, that Command and Conquer Generals is such a rip-off from Dune 2 , it makes me sick to see the comparison! Bah and Need for speed is such a Stunt Drivers clone, I mean they both got cars! ...

Plowking: before you even THINK about resorting to ad-hominem attacks on me, remember that you are severely under-equipped to even TRY.

If all we should care about is the story, then how come we're all not still playing Eye of the Beholder, or better yet, pen and paper AD&D? I mean, if graphics are nothing in the grand scheme of RPGs, why are companies like, say, Bioware or Bethesda (albeit that's a stretch) even bothering?

And yes, 90% of FPSs are Doom clones... which isn't a bad thing for what they are intended to be... the 10% remaining try to invent something new, and those are the games that I would play.

Diablo's "action RPG" is a concept that was amusing in the beginning, but got old in a hurry. It's RPG for idiots. Hack-hack-hack-hack, look, my character has stats, w00t! As far as I'm concerned, Diablo cloning has peaked in Dungeon Siege...

By the way as far as grand story goes. I'm not even going to start on the inanity that passed for the story in DD. Of course, it's all grand. I mean, what other RPG would have you washing dishes? How original and inventive is it to end the game with a massive, tedious, boring dungeon crawl that cannot be solved with anything other than brute force? Yawn-a-licious.

Oh... and Marian... I see nothing much has changed at Larian Studios either... still gonna profusely thank people for not pirating your game on the first page of the manual BTW? That was just pathetic.

Your awkward attempts at rebuking all things Larian and Divinity related seem to stem from something far deeper than just a standard dislike for a game, or game type, and perhaps the developers.

Furthermore your desire to post said aggressions here, in the only place it would have any effect (or so you think) tells me that you have something missing from your life, and are clearly unhappy with some aspect; forcing you to lash out just as you have done. Maybe your mother didn't love you'I don't know! Or perhaps some loner who failed to get an interview for a job at Larian, and so has become some sort of anal obsessive with a Phantom of the Opera complex?

One wonders!

Thnx for sharing your thoughts with us. Very entertaining indeed. Now could you please take your pathetic attitude out of here? You know nobody forces you to buy the game after all.

I am just wondering... is he only a gamer?

Because graphics mean everything for sales. When you first see a game, it will probably be a screenshot on the web, in a mag or on the gamebox itself. To see a game with gorgeous graphics gives you a good first impression, and draws your attention to the game. And more attention means more publicity, which stands equal to good sales.

Let's face it. Good graphics is why most people buy a game, but it's gameplay that makes them enjoy it, and play it for a long time.

Initially that might be true, however it doesn't hold up in the long run. I didn't buy <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> because of the graphics at first... but after months went by, and I heard from many people that it was a great RPG and the gameplay was good, I bought it, ignoring the fact that the graphics were weak. They really aren't even that weak... but it's no Dungeon Siege engine or anything.

I care more about gameplay than graphics, but graphics does influence my initial reaction. After I hear good things about the game, graphics are irrelevent.

When I played Divine Divinity, the only similarities I found between it and Diablo 2 was the combat, and Divine Divinity had actually *improved* on the combat just by the simple addition of allowing you to hold down the CTRL key to attack the nearest enemy instead of having to specifically target an enemy. I certainly don't remember it being clunky and to this day, wish Diablo 2 had a similar "attack nearest enemy" function.

I am currently playing Sacred and it is a very enjoyable game. I wish it also had the same "attack nearest enemy" function of Divine Divinity for that matter. It has a lot of similarities to Diablo 2, but there are many differences as well, some for bad and some for good.

Sometimes I get the impression that some want us to decide which of these games is the "best" and that we can only like that one "best" game and have to hate all of the others. Not so for me! I like all three of the above mentioned games very much! (And many many others as well...PS:T, BG series, Fallout series, Morrowind, Ultima series, IWD, The Sims, etc. etc.)

Since we don't have to pick out only one and only one game to like, why not enjoy *both* Sacred and Beyond Divinity? That's what I'm planning to do anyway. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Amen! I'll play them both. One of Beyond Divinity's selling points over Sacred is the items and the fact that you can pick up almost everything in the game world and the quests are much more involved and in depth. Sacred's quests, combat and items are more like D2. But the point is, they are all different games, so play them all <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/up.gif" alt="" />

Tee-hee! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ROFL.gif" alt="" />

I swear, the phrase "STFU fanboy" was coined specifically for people like Plowking, LUCRETIA and jvb. Yes, I know, it's not the most eloquent way to convey my feelings... but hell, it accomplishes the goal in 10 letters and one space, and it is right on the level which can be readily understood by the aforementioned three without over-straining their intelligence. People like that exist on every forum: not too bright, very lonely, desperate to look like their in-game avatars, with way too much time on their hands, and ready to start a flame war with anyone who insults the GREATEST PEOPLE ON EARTH: THE GAME DEVELOPERS.

Chill out, kids: I was TRYING to avoid the ad-hominem attacks by a fair warning, and Plowking misconstrued it as an invitation to try. Bad move <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> But for what it's worth, I am profusely sorry for undermining the image of the people who bring your wet dreams to life, and possibly traumatizing you. Or maybe I'm not. Whatever.

Now back on topic.

There are good games and better games. And then there are games that flat out disappoint (i.e. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> ). And just as anyone else has the right to squeal and bounce in anticipation of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> , I have the right to express my opinion that it will, too, disappoint.

Reason number one for the said disappointment would be the usage of the SAME DAMN ENGINE and the same regurgitated graphics. The whole world is flat and square. Character appearance customization is limited. Everyone looks the same at the end. Yawn...

Reason number two would be the story written by the same people who brought us the original. Anyone who says that it was "grand" must've never played Arcanum or Fallout. Granted, the formula for every RPG is pretty much the same, but there are more original ways to follow it and there are less original ways. When was the last time an RPG allowed you to actually TALK the end boss into committing suicide? Right, not since Arcanum.

I haven't bought an RPG since Bloodmoon - and that was only an expansion smirk. I'd gladly part with my hard-earned $50 (do you even KNOW how long it takes to earn $50 being a junior floor mopper apprentice at MickeyD's?) for something original and worthwhile. Instead - it's all just more of the same...

Well, well... Damar, the knight with an attitude...

Well, I think it is pathetic how you hack and slash your way through this forum. Insulting the Larians was a bit over the limit for me. Although I don't know them I have a lot of respect for independent programmers who try to make a living and wether their product is good or not you should respect them for that because they just have the guts to try it.

Try to work out your frustrations somewhere else dear Damar and leave us be or at least try be decent when talking to people who know how to behave.

I already have Sacred - been playing it for weeks. It's not a patch on what Divine Divinity was, and what Beyond Divinity will be.

Why not? It's shallow. It (and Diablo) will appeal to people wanting a quick hack and slash and not wanting to engage their brains to any degree (not that there's anything wrong with that), but I prefer games that require me to have a bit more intelligence.

Just a matter of taste.

I don't have a problem with people who aren't looking forward to <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> or telling that they don't like it because of this or that. Hey, that's your perfect right. I just regret the way you are telling it (your language) and if you tell it once, ok, no prob, we know that you don't like it and why, and maybe we realize some of the weaknesses you point us at? But why do you keep on telling it? If I were you, and I don't like a product, whether being it a music cd, a game, a tv program,... I wouldn't even bother about it.
Still, I am pleased to read, that you kept on following <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> even if you were already convinced that <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> was crap.
No hard feelings, I have my opinion too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Have a good day,
Lynn

I have to agree with Lynn on this one. As entitled as you are to your opinion on DivDiv and thus what you perceive your opinion will be on BD, why get all aggressive about it and start insulting forum members? If there's one thing that Larian do, it's listen to their critics, hence the reason BD was held back while the studio addressed some issues that fans had commented on. It's an attitude that many studios should adopt. So it's the same engine, so what? It's hardly the first time that's been done. DivDiv managed to cultivate lots of fans, clearly not you, and BD is a game for them. Btw it isn't written by exactly the same people and I should know.
