Got a frustrating problem in <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> and <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> and don't know what to do.
Cannot play either one because machine says can't read/update configuration files.

I'm running a homebuilt AthlonXP 2000 w/1048MB RAM, a GeForceFX 5600 w/256MB RAM, on-board sound, W2000 Pro. - running as administrator.
Both DivDiv & BeDiv ask same question: "Make sure you have permission to alter files". HuH? I'M THE ADMINISTRATOR!

DivDiv hasn't worked in 2 mos., BeDiv installed, let me create a character, I immediately saved the game, exited, and could never restart.

Anybody got any suggestions? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />

Welcome to the forums, Galaraf! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

Do you have any version of the DivX player installed on your system per chance?

No - I do use Power DVD, though, if that means anything.

I'm having the same problem with the configuration system. I do however have the latest DivX. What should I do?

Probably doesn't mean anything......

I had the same problem when the <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> demo came out and i still had <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> installed....when i went to use the configtool i kept getting errors about not being able to read the cfg file and......exiting....
i eventually uninstalled <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> and ran the demo of <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> with no problems....i did have to reset the config twice before i got it going......
maybe this helps...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />

I'll check this evening when I get home, but I do have to let PowerDVD know a drive to plat DVD's in. I have 4 hard drives - 120GB w/2 partitions (C:,D:), one 13GB w/2 partitions (E:, G:), one unpartitioned 13GB (H:), and one unpartitioned 10GB (I:) and both a DVD/CD player (F:) and a DVD player/CD writer combo (J:)installed on the machine (I have a PCI card that will allow 4 drives, on which I added 2). DVD's will automatically play in either DVD drive. Do you think I need to disable PowerDVD when I want to play? I've always had PowerDVD & never had the problem.

I started getting the error message about DivDiv not being shut down correctly & then not being able to read the config files (& asking whether I had "permission" to alter files - remember I'm the administrator) after an unexpexted power loss, however, I uninstalled everything (even saved games) & reinstalled - never worked since. All drives except C: are FAT32, while C: is NTFS (as it was when I originally installed DivDiv & completed the game at least 3 times).

I'm about ready to try a dual boot system and put Win98SE on one of the other drives, since both games seem to work on my old machine - an Athlon 800, 640MB memory, 64MB GeForce4MX, DVD/CD writer combo, 13GB (C:)(operating system & a few apps) and 80GB (D:)(90% of software & other files). Only thing is, it means a bit o'work! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

It wouldn't be a bad idea to shut down all non-essential programs before starting the game, but I don't see how PowerDVD would cause a problem. Even if it tries to autoplay everything and interferes with the copy protection, I would not expect that to extend to reading the configuration files.

Hi folks!

Well, I successfully loaded Win98SE on my AthlonXP2000, except haven't got video card working yet - need that before installing either DD or BD.

Using Partition Commander & it WILL dual-boot.

I'm hoping the Win2K firewall & antivirus stuff will allow me to eschew using them on 98, since I'll only use that offline.

I won't even install PowerDVD on the 98 version - games only! That's all I'll use it for.

If it works, I'll let y'all know here (probably later tonight). Off to try now.
Wish me luck 'cause I LOVE DivDiv & can't wait to play BeDiv!

Back again...

Downloaded NVidia drivers for Win98 & got video to work (1280x1024).

Started to install DivDiv & got as far as 1st CD.
Put in 2nd CD... Now stuck in DVD/CDRW drive!!!!

PLUS - install asks to "Put Game Disk in any CD drive".

Jeeeesh!!!!

Talk about a love/hate relationship! I love/hate computers.

Think I'll go to 1024x768 (for starters) - never told you I have an old Hitachi SuperScan Pro 20 monitor I got as surplus from my office. It's a little dark (normally), but with NVidia, you can set brightness & have it boot that way - and of course the gamma settings in DivDiv are VERY configurable (one reason I love it).

So..., I'm still trying, but I feel I may make it yet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/badsmile2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/puppyeyes.gif" alt="" />
Gotta keep looking optomistically <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sleepey.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/silly.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/question.gif" alt="" />

So far only installed the following on Win98 boot of system:

Win98SE (no upgrades/patches/updates - straight from orig. CD)
4-in-1 drivers from motherboard software disk
Sound card drivers from motherboard software disk
NVidia drivers off internet site (latest - 56.64_Win9.x_English}
Oh yes - using a Logitech Optical Mouse & IBM KB-9910 Black Keyboard(as if that matters)

By the way... Thanks for the warm welcome <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif" alt="" />
(Let me know if it's OKay to "plug" our websites)

There is a manual install method for Divine Divinity if you can not get the second CD recognized, though there could have been file or folder structure changes when the CDs were updated to v1.34.

Troubleshooting Tips (& manual install procedure)

For Beyond Divinity you can to copy 3 files from the 2 CDs (don't need the autorun.inf file) to the same folder on the hard drive and install from there.

Got DivDiv to install, but now won't read config file, even after installing the patch (I know I'm talking about Divine Divinity right now, but I want it working before I try to install Beyond Divinity).

If I ever get DD working, I'll install BD & the patch (I'd already downloaded it before my son bought the game) before I ever try to open it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

For some reason when i had the demo for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> and <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />
installed at the same time......
I was having a lot of config errors "unable to read config file exiting"
i uninstalled everything, and reinstalled <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> alone......the config tool seems to be working allright now.......it was as if the two games were affecting each others config file.... i guess it only works one at a time....... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />
something about that configtool...... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

I did uninstall DD just before installing BD i think so i had not the problem.
But BD demo and BD are next to each other in their respective directories without problem <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Check the Divine Divinity folder for the files config.div and slashed.cfg. If present, try moving or renaming them; perhaps the program will have better luck recreating them.

I had DD installed when I installed / uninstalled the BD demo, as well as when I installed BD, and never had any problems with either game reading config files.
