The other day, I noticed that unlearning skills seemed to be costing a *lot* more money than they were supposed to (and rather more than the price quoted when I first unlearned the skill). To the point where (just pulling numbers out of the air, but it should capture the gist of what happened), I paid 10000 to unlearn a skill when I had about 50000 total, and ended up with no money at all.

So I did some testing with the skill screen and the inventory screen open simultaneously (so I could track when money was being deducted). Here's what I discovered:

If I unlearn a skill, no money is actually deducted until I reassign those skill points to a new skill.

If I then go on to reassign points to more than one skill, money will be deducted repeatedly for every skill I add. This seems to be the case whether the points I assign to the new skill came from the skill I unlearned or not.

For example: Say I had five points in evasion, which I sold back for (again pulling numbers out of the air) 10000. I also have two skill points from a recent level-up that I haven't assigned to any skill yet. I assign four of those points to alchemy - extract, and 10000 gets deducted, which is as it should be. I assign one point to a new spell. Another 10000 gets deducted. I assign my other skill points to other skills. Again, money gets deducted. (If I run out of money, it'll still let me assign skills.)

Getting out of the skill window (after I've assigned points to the first skill, cause otherwise it cancels the unlearning altogether) and going back in seems to solve this problem, but until I figured this out, I was burning through a looooot of money.

I'm running a Hardcore game, version 1.45, if that makes any difference.

I can't say that the same is happening for me, but I haven't paid attention to my gold as I re-assigned the unlearn skill points. I'll have to watch for that next time. However, I did notice that as I increase in levels, it costs more to unlearn skills. Earlier in the game, I could unlearn skills for thousands, but it cost me 24k at level 27 to unlearn a skill. I only wanted to re-assign 2 skill points, too! D'oh!

that's interesting. i noticed something else odd. if you choose to unlearn a skill, and pay the fee, but then cancel the skill screen, you still get charged the fee. i noticed this when i was examining what i wanted to do, and was trying to figure out which skill i wanted to drop. changing my mind i cancelled and then did it again. having 50,000 gold, i had none but only really unlearned 2 skills at 10,000 gold each. i cancelled 3 times before deciding to go with 2 different skills. i never had an issue with the skill points as you describe, but after cancelling 3 times, unbeknownst to me, i had 20,000 left so when i decided which skills i wanted to drop, i did, and had no gold left.

...good thing I spotted this thread.

Now I'll know to drop all of my gold before I relearn a new skill.
