Disk 2 is the play disk, and needs to be in the drive when the game is started.

I thought just the Australian version came with a CD key you had to enter? Do you have the French version? Did you check you were not entering zeros for O's, or something?

I'm in western Canada.

Apparently they did not try installing the game at the store to prove or disprove a problem with the CD key?

In the North American and UK English versions, the copy protection can produce a report which can be used to generate a key to allow the game to be played on that specific computer, in cases where there is a conflict with the optical drive (causing the play CD not to be recognized). Is there any such option in the French version?

Try contacting the publisher (it is possible some CDs and cases got mixed up between batches, so the listed CD key is not for the CD you have), or email Larian (support@larian.com).

The french version of the game shouldn't require a CD key as long as you put the second CD (game CD) in the drive...

What you can try :
1. If you have several CD drives, try in both of them
2. Try shutting down programs which may interfere with the CD drive, like drive emulators, burning programs, media players...
3. If you have previously installed a "copy" of the game, it may have left some garbage in the registry, please contact support@larian.com they'll tell you how to clean it up.
4. If nothing works, contact support@larian.com anyway <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Btw, the technical FAQ may provide some more help for generic problems : http://www.larian.com/riftrunner/FAQ.php?section=9

There is no need to fill in a key. Just put CD 2 (labelled "Disc Two" or "Game Disc") in the CD drive and start up.

If you have tried to enter a key, maybe you entered the wrong key. You can delete this by going to the registry (click START, click RUN, type REGEDIT and hit OK). Look for the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LarianStudios\BeyondDivinity and check if there is a value "key" or "keys" there. Delete it if it is there, but do not touch the other values (default, installdir, lang, version).

If the game does not start with CD 2 in the drive, have the protection gather information and send this file to support <at> larian <dot> com.

What does says this ? The game itself or Windows ? Is it exactly the same on your friend's computer ? If this is the case, it means the CD is badly damaged, could see if the surface is scratched ?

Have you looked in the registry and tried to remove the key you found there ?

If you click on my nic, my email address is in my profile.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before trying to start the game, even if they don't seem likely to interfere?

At least in the North American and UK English versions, the CD Key error that comes up when disk 1 is in the drive is simply a poorly worded error message from the Starforce copy protection, meaning that it can not find the play CD / disk 2 in an optical drive.

If you are getting the same error on 2 different systems, it means either there is something wrong with the CD itself (though apparently not sever enough to prevent the game from installing), or both computers have optical drives that have a problem with the copy protection.

Check the CD for scratches, or even fingerprints. If there is nothing physically wrong with the CD, follow Drealmer's advice and email Larian (support@larian.com).
In the 'No Disk Found' error message, click on the 'Information' button, then when that finishes, click the 'View Report' button. Save the resulting text file somewhere, optionally zip it, and email it to Larian with a description of the problem and maybe a link to this topic.

IkoH, if 2 Larians offer you to contact their studio => it's not a "bother", as you stated. Why don't you try it? Hm? You can't lose anything <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Copy protection issue caused by larian. there the ones who should be dealing with this. continued denial of responsibility by larian is just silly.
