The below was posted after a post of mine...

It's haloween soon !?!?! I didn't know! (Just has to add that I don't like the way Americans celebrate halloween. You know the Trick-or-Treat thing. It's not the thing itself, but the fact that ******** kids are now doing it ! It's kind of annoying since the only persons who benefits from it it is the company that seels the costumes! Not the kids, since they'll just goes around asking, but since we don't celebrate Haloween that way, they won't get any candy, so they will have to decorate our lawns with toiletpaper, or (in more extreme cases) put mud in our mailboxes or throw eggs at our houses, whith just gets our mail dirty, and we have to hire cleaningcompanys in order to get our house clean. I HATE THE AMERICANIZATION OF OUR SOCIETY !!! We've got our own goddamn culture, why do we have to take after you americans? It's not that it's something wrong with American culture... Oh whait, there is... Sorry I mentioned it ...).

PS OK, that last one were pretty low, but the thing is, I can't see much good in American culture. Maybe it is because I'm sitting in a smal town on the other side of the Atlantic sea, whatching you with asmall bincular, which makes the images very small and blurry, but as I can see, the are good things in American society, but not as many good things as their is bad things. But, as I said, I havn't been there, so I (probably) don't know what it's like over there. I only know how it's here, and I can't see what you do over there that's so great, that we over here have to do the same thing. I can't see what you're doing so great at all, to be honest (if I offended anybody, offend me back, and when I get hurt, tell me I did the same thing, and I might lern from it...)

We Americans don't like that stuff neither.
It's not called an American thing.

It's called a bad child that needs their bottom spanked for being bad thing.

Don't let propaganda misguide you.

I am an American, but I only see men and women.
I make no distinction between countries.

All people are good in my eyes unless they decide to be bad.
That is the only distinction I ever make.

I am not alone in my thinking.
Many Americans feel as I do.

We are not all bad people.
Don't let the sins of a few reflect upon us all.
I beg of you.
I love you all.

Take Care

Hi Kyra Ny

People in this forum just think like you.
They don't make distinction between countries.
And American people are appreciated, not less, not more, than other people.
Ask Lews ! (That makes me think that it is Lew's birthday )

It is just Ubereil who forgot to think before to write his post.
Ub is still young and he does not realise that some words could hurt.
Don't worry too much about that !

I have noticed several times throughout every year that somebody will post a such anti-american post. I get used to it.

Not to put words in Ubereil's mouth, but I think that his message was really "I HATE THE AMERICANIZATION OF OUR SOCIETY", which is not at all the same as saying he dislikes Americans! It is simply that American culture is so dominant in some areas (through movies, etc) that many young people get swept up in it at the expense of knowing and appreciating their own culture.

It's always more provocative and more dramatic to be anti-something than pro-somethingelse... Kinda like Microsoft, eh?

Anyhow, Barta is quite right: no matter where in the world we live, when we are here our country is Larian, and we are all patriots, yes?

Amen to the wise words of Rincewind.

It seemed a relatively mild post to me - by internet standards anyway. Here in Australia many people are also concerned about the Americanisation of our country. But it's worth remembering that exactly the same happened with the overseas spread of English culture, Dutch, Spanish, French, Russian, etc when their influence was spreading. It's just America's turn now....

I think one thing is a lot of trends begin in America and America is seen a lot overseas. Some people are replicating what happens in America and others reinvent it over here. Americans also replicate things that happen over here. These things are everywhere and it's mostly because we see America, and only the most exciting bits, so frequently through our little picture boxes that we associate all of these traits with America.

I am not a racist person, but I am cautious of people from other races. Stereotypes, while they don't apply to everyone, do have their sources. I will treat them the same as anyone else, but keep my wits about me just incase. I have only met one American in person, and he was a complete [nocando] artist. I know that's not all of you. Sad but true...

As Rincewid says I have nothing agaist American pepole (unless I meet them ang they're total jerks with completely [nocando] up valuations etc), just the Americanization of the Swedish society. And a little against the American society, but I think that comes from lack of knowledge more than anything else.

And Kyra, you talked about spanking children. I'm brought up in a country where hurting children in any whay is illegal. Scareing them is illegal, not speaking of fysically harming them. That's why I think hurting children is reluctant, I whant nothing to with anything like that, the thought makes me sick. I don't like it at all.

Ubereil - Sometimes when people say that a child "needs a good spanking", they just mean the child needs discipline. It's quite a common figure of speech in North America, and doesn't necessarily imply physical spanking...

well that's not only in North America...
i think this figure of speech exist in many european languages too... (and that's really not a proof of so called Americanisation)... I think that before denouncing this americanisation (especially on the internet) we should wonder why our societies are so permeable to this kind of influence but this is another problem. ok, strictly IMHO said...

Übereil - Germans celebrate Halloween now - but I want to tell you about another really German custom, celebrated in November: St. Martin's Day.

Legend says, this Holy Man once met a shivering beggar in winter and shared with him 50% of his cloak. Message => share. Similar to Halloween, hm?

We celebrate it like this: Kids run from house to house, carry a lantern and sing one of the St. Martin songs, then get a treat (sweets, money, etc.) - If an adult did not give anything, the kids chanted a song about misers.

perversion now:
Kids run from house to house, know no Martin song by heart (if you're lucky, they know the 1st sentence), some even don't carry a lantern - look at you and want a treat.
It was a Christian custom - now it's commerce. Young kids (kindergarten) still know this tradition, it's the older (greedy) kids and commerce who perverted this quaint custom.

Kids swarm out and visit shops in hoards => same effect.

The message of St. Martin (share) is lost, the message now => gather and be greedy. Some even demand (!) money instead of treats.

Americanization? Nope. Was a German tradition.

I think, you have something similar in Sweden, right? St. Lucia? Something about a Lady with lights on her head.
**********************

@Kyra => if I would consider Americans to be "bad" just because of their heritage, I could only spank myself for my narrow-mindedness. As Barta already explained => the vast majority here sees the individual and not the country. I got to know people here who became my close friends, not just internet buddies - and the amount of Americans is pretty high in my top fav list. Because they're Americans? Nope. In spite of them being Americans? Nope. Because I like them

Well what can I say after all these words of wisdom ...... except, do not let other people influence the person you are, because that usually turns you into something that you are not .....think about it

on a further tidbit in a similar vein, the Restaurant I work in had a problematic customer 1 day, he blatantly said to me that he would refuse to be served by his current waiter, now this guy happen to be a top notch waiter, he is also Vietnamese! To which I concluded, by the customers inference and tone, not to mention the excellent standard of service he has had thus far, that the customer was a "Racist" I fixed this by saying "certainly Sir, another waiter shall be with you in a moment" and then proceeded to tell the afore mentioned waiter to get his Brother to serve the table conclusion I was happy (cause I like being a smartass) the Vietnamese Brothers where happy, cause they thought it was a good joke The customer well I dont really care about him ..... do you ?

Yes we do. We celebrate it in remembrance of an old Cristian legend. I think it started differently (like most Swedish traditions) but it ended up being about a girl who were cristian who were supposed to be married to some dude she didn't know. He didn't like her so he accused her of blasphermy (I'd be supprized if I spelled that correctly), or christiannity was illegal in these times, anyway, they tried to burn her on a stick, but god protected her from the flames (and thrughs) so she didn't burn, and the thrugs couldn't harm her, and after that everyone turned christian, and so on (not shure of the exact facts, but it's supposed to have happened something like this).

We celebrate it by having a girl (prefered blond and beutifull, because Lucia is believed to be blond, and an ugly saint?) dressed up in a white dress and with a crown of candles on her head. There is only one of her. She has some other girls allso dressed in white but only carrying one candle. We allso have some boys dressed in a white dress (...) carrying a stick with a golden star on the top, and a cone with stars on their heads. And what they do is sing. They sing songs espessially for this occation (Lucia songs), and since it's celebrated on December the 13:th, they allso sing some christmass songs. They get nothing for it.

Übereil (MUAHAHAHAHA, OUR TRADITIONS IS BETTER THAN YOURS . Sorry for that)

PS If you whant a Swedish tradition a bit equal to the haloween thing, and St Martins day thing, we have our whay to celebrate easter (allso related in old believs). We (or to be honest, the smaller kids, I haven't done tit for ten years) dress up like witches and warlocks (or old pepole in the 18:th sencury, I mean, what's the difference), and goes around offering letters (basicly we draw something like a chicken on a piece of paper, writes (or older pepole who can write) happy easter on them and fold them together. Easter letters, we call them, since we're so extremely original), and get sweets. If we hand them the letter that is. So we have to do some work in order to get our sweets. I find that better than the american styled "Gimme sweets if you don't whant to clean your garden", but that's just me. And I'm being partical, since I'm brought up with it. That's the way it's meant to be. Tis might not be the only reason, but it's a major reason. On easter the kids write "letters", dress up like witches and warlocks (or old pepole in the 18:th sencury...), goes out, knocks on doors, gives letters and gets sweets. That's what I did when I was a kid. That's what kids do on easter, here in Sweden. We're not pissed of because we have to give sweets to pepole (ok, kids) we don't know, we're happy to do it, because it reminds us of our childhood, what we did when we were kids. When I'm older, and kids don't do what I did when I was a kid, at least I know that they will do this on easter. Just like I did. DS

We too have a tradition like that in Australia: Grand Final day (Australian Rules Football). Families and friends get together, have a big barbeque, sharing food and beer, and cheer on with millions of others to see their team win. It's like another family event fitting nicely between Easter and Christmas.

And don't forget that other great Australian excuse for taking a day off and giving yourself and your mates presents of liberal amounts of food and drink... a certain horse race that's due shortly. What's it called..
