Hello,
I am fairly new to this game having cleared out most of the citadel in act 1. I have been playing alot of similar types of games (icewind dale, Dungeon seige, etc...) for a while and have developed a liking towards mages in all those games. This game however is a bit different in its skill progressions. I have searched through the forums on tips on building the characters but havent been able to find anything. If i want to make my main a mage and the deathguy a melee, what stats should i be adding to other than the obvious int for mage and str for melee? also, as a mage, i got 5 points into fire magic missle and stopped adding to anything else because it seems like a waste to add to say... ice (due to the insane mana requirements which add). As a melee i have a 1hand slash skill adding to dmg accuracy and deathly strike (not sure about the DS but added to it anyway) but i rather use 2 handed skill (which i cannot find in the skill tree). I have been looking at alchemy which has a few threads... other then that i dont really know what to add to. i have no idea really, i would hate to go thorugh say 3 acts only to find out that my mage wasnt built properly. I like to do my research in advance, and looking as some of the walkthroughs (not for content of the game but for character creation) i am unable to find any info on this.
Thanks in advance

Hi,

If you have a mage try putting one point in each of the elements. Enemies later in the game will have resistances to fire or the other elements. Also, invest some skill points in Hammer. It is one of the most powerful spells in the game.

Don't forget agility, especially for the melee character.
Shaman magic spells are available in act 2, which are much more powerful than the spells in act 1.
Two handed melee skills are available later in act 1 from one of the soldiers in the citadel, or from Olaf in the battlefields.

There is a filter icon on the skill window, which will let you toggle between showing the skills you know and all skills.

i did exactly what you're doing. for my character, i pumped up int first (obviously) and then survival, str and dex (str&dex for equipment purposes). i had one mid-level fire spell for general use, one high-mid level earth spell for tougher opponents, and hammer and lightning jacked up for really tough encounters. quite frankly though my dk warrior did the vast majority of the heavy lifting with sharpened weapon, one hand slashing focus and shield. no real need for alchemy as you find plenty of potions and can buy what you need/can't find. i'd stay away from summoning skills as they only apply to one doll and can't be sold. by the time you get to end game, you'll be so rich you can freely sell off any skill and buy another if you feel the need.

IMHO the most powerful way to go is:

1. Hero = Mage. Pump up your Elemental Focussed skill, use a Bow (and Splitting Arrows) as your walking around weapon (especially in the Battlefields, with the Hero leading). Do not worry too much about putting points into Melee weapons, you won't use them much at all. Save your best gear with 3 or 4 charm slots until you can load them up with pickpocketed Gold Charms (Ydra, Koor, Zand, & Joph mostly with a couple Ustr and Vorr. Forget about the rest). Keep Shaman Magic - Hammer as high as you can get it and use it often. You might also consider starting the character as a Survivor, then building it into a Mage.

2. DK = Warrior. 2-H Melee is very powerful, but you have to decide if using 1-H melee W/Shield plus Shield Blocking is better (you get extra charm slots if you go with the shield, a big plus). Pump up the Melee skills mostly, but put some points into Bow or X-Bow for use as the primary weapon in the Battlefields, and only switch from Bow to Melee when necessary.

Keep pickpocket max'ed, but use it wisely for the most expensive and best items and gold early in the game. In the Battlefields don't pickpocket from Keith much until you are done with the Act then pickpocket him for all of his high quantity of arrows at one time. To make pickpocketing less messy do all of your selling with Annabelle (the potions merchant).

Sharpen is a skill worth a few points throughout the game, just be careful that you keep the weapon within your agility range.

If you intend to play in the After-Game battlefields a very strong Mage will be a good way to go. The monsters there may say they are your same level, but they are more powerful than you expect.

That's for the most power... anything else is just fun and experimenting <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
