Northern Europe has taken a battering in a storm that has claimed over a dozen lives, caused flooding, transport chaos and left hundreds of thousands without electricity. In Sweden, seven deaths were reported, including three motorists whose cars were hit by falling trees. Two nuclear reactors had to be closed down, temporarily.

Massive power cuts hit households in several countries, including Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Estonia. An electricity crisis was declared by the Latvian government. In northern England three people died amid flooding. Two others were missing in the UK.

The wild weather has meant misery for motorists in Estonia. For many, getting from A to B was simply impossible. Summoning help also proved difficult with mobile and fixed line telephones hit. Water in some places went 3 meters higher than normal. Wind speed reached 38 meters per second.

Today, at evening, another storm is expected. Storm warming has already announced.

Thanks for putting that up Egin.
Media here only showed UK and Scandinavia. And mentioned 2 ppl being missing in Germany.
If you wouldn't have shown us most of us would never have known it been so bad there too.

SInce the Tsunami the weather all over the world seems to have gone haywire....

In SA, our daily temperatures are higher than normal, we have had the most flash floods recorded in 65 years, where we havnt had any deaths / drownings related to floods in the last 3 years (and normally when there are casualties, its 1 or 2 a year, and mostly in the coastal areas), this year in Gauteng (our province) alone, there has been 9 deaths / drownings. And we are inland.... not prone to any floods (for that matter not prone to lots of rain either).

3 days ago, we had 180mm in 36 minutes!!!!

I know its nothing compared to the storm in europe, but the point is that the whole globe's weather has gone abnormal....

ALl my sympathies to those with damages, and those without electricity... i hope it will be restored quickly.

Sorry Egin. Glad you are ok.

The tsunami was not a weather phenomena--it resulted from an earthquake.

1st sympathy to all the victims (great or less great victims...)

2nd i'm sorry to be a bit brutal but considering that it could be related to the tsunami in SEA is apparently scientifically just bullsh*t... please don't be confusing things like that...

I hope after that the weather will be normal again. I'm glad everyone is ok in the effected areas. But do you guys believe me now, when I say something in the line of that movie "the day after tomrrow" can happen. I'm really not kidding here, but our environment has lost her ability to recover on it's own. Of course nothing so dramaticly as in the movie will happen , in movies things are always overdone. Just think about it...

I agree with you Gal' our little planet is changing rapidly at the moment. There has been a lot of recorded disasters lately, the planet is rotating slightly faster (over the last year, but it has only been openly announced after the tsunami), not much, but 1 thousanth of a second per day. This has never been recorded before.

If you draw a listing of the quakes recorded (just in SE asia in this example), it has increased 10 fold from previous years. (not all of the quakes are felt on land, but they are all still recorded, and most of them are above 4.0)

i've broken my toothbrush (teethbrush?) yesterday... maybe a tsunami after-effect ...

i'm sorry but i can't help myshelf... all these considerations about weather are really laughable and...

will we have these apolcalyptic considerations after all natural catastrophs <sigh>

it is a classical phenomen called replicant (well in french at least)...

it is the case after all major earthquake...

the amplitude depends on the original quake amplitude...

it has none but really none relationship with the weather <resigh>

The weather is sure Freaky-Deaky all over the earth right now.
It seems everything has changed up a bit since our earth held still for a moment after that quake.
I really feel for those who have lost their homes and loved ones.
I can't even imagine how one would feel, but I empathize for them.

Yeah, we had something stormy-like a few days ago here around Cologne as well.

On Saturday I was going to a meeting with two friends (called "Star Wars Dinner of Cologne ) and I noticed that stormy wind, too. Unfortunately I caught the flu that evening.

Thanks everyone.
Scientists say that mostly, more and more storms at these days happend due to global warming as more and more energy frees with it.
We see more storms in eastern Europe, especially during winter time, we move towards western Europe, it seems that the global climate is changing

Yeah, I see that, too. From my point of view everythings changed gradually since the early 90s.

I noticed the winters in Western Europe are much warmer than they used to be. We hardly get any snow, if we do it does not stay long. Its not cold enough to kill all the bugs. So in the summer there are too many bugs, especially wasps and flies. Normally exotic spiders can't survive in Belgium, but there are a few that came from Asia and America and they mate with our own species and so they can survive. Sooner or later we will get attacked by those Killerbees and hugh spiders!! Help!!!

Actually,
They ware Australian. Redbacks.
And they didn't really mate with other species. In Europe lives a close (but a lot less toxic) relative of the redback. Also in America you can find a relative of the redback... the Black Widow.
They only survived in warm spots in factories. And not for all that long. Most of that story was a fairytale.

But it is a fact that agressive species from the south are invading Europe.
In south Italy fi, you better watch where you put your feet on the beaches. African scorpions are often seen there.

And also an African kind of ant. That destroys all other insects (including native ants to Europe) that crosses its path.
In some parts of suthern Europe they wiped out all native ant species.

In Belgian rivers you can find Asian crabs. Who are also a danger to local wildlife.

And so on and on and on...

I once read an article on a guy who imported a car form the states and got one of these as a bonus... No one dared to even touch the car, so driving it was pretty impossible... It ended with him saying that they were going to try and freeze tha car down, since black widdows don't like cold (as you said, Seth).
