Can someone help me here.
I downloaded a program on my husband's pc that is called "contentwatch 2.0" and now there is a huge virus on my hubbies pc.
I could remove some of the parts, but not all of them.
System repair isn't helping, neither removing it manually. No need to tell you guys that he is really pissed off at me right now. So, if anyone of you could help me with that? And please please, don't tell me that I need to "formatt" his pc!!
btw, he is running Kaspersky as antivirus.

Gal, please tell us what's the name of the virus. how do u know it is one? or maybe it's spyware? give us some symptoms first before we can let u know how best to tackle the beast.

anyway, if u happen to know the name of the virus, u can try finding the fix in Symantec's website. try searching.

other than that, i don't know how else to help unless i have more info.

Have you run Ad-Aware and Spybot ? You can also download a DOS-based version of F-Prot which is free, too, but not an "on demand scanner".

Also, there is the German-based AntiVir which is also a good scanner.

By the way, if System Repair doesn't help, this could mean it was in before System Repair made an earlier "Snapshot" ...

By the way, I hope you still have a Firewall ?

As you write it, it almost sounds as of this "contentwatch" was the virus in itself ...

Don't forget to update your definitions before scanning your whole pc, also a good thing to disconnect you from the internet while scanning.(Some virusses/trojans/spyware download themselfs again after removing).

Gal first off, have you got Windows XP? if you do try system restore to before you installed that program.

If you have win98 or ME try this online scanner and remover Trend Micro ifthat dont work and you dont want to format at least it should tell you what the name of the virus is then go to Jangg's Symantec link and find the correct Virus removal tool.

and if that don't work yell out real loudly on all forums "Raze!!!!!!" the man is an outstanding helping hand when it comes to pc's and someone from this forum you can trust ....too

and if that don't work try getting a hold of the very busy Lady_Rain, who answered so helpfully below, it is not that I recommended Raze, without thinking of LR, but more like she sooo busy that I could hardly impose on her.

Meantime thanks LR for the heads-up on Sys Rest

Hmmm i did some searching on contentwatch 2.0.....

That is not what caused the virus at all... (its just bad timing that you got it NOW, and hubby thinks its you)

Contentwatch is similar to net nanny.....

What i do suggest is that you install either avast (i remember sending that to you at some stage) or pc cillin on hubby's pc... Kapersky has a MAJOR flaw with allowing viruses through.... if you do a search on the name kapersky, you will find hundreds of documents and complaints about that....

System restore is VERY dangerous to use to get rid of a virus... most viruses now exploit system restore (they manage to write them into earlier restore points) to make sure you cant get rid of it... every time you restart the computer, it will "restore" itself automatically from your system restore files.... (they have a call in the registry that checks if they are deleted, and then restores it, BEFORE the system finishes booting and loads the anti-virus.

If you manage to remove the virus and it keeps on coming back when you re-boot, disable the system restore (just for 2 reboot's) until the when you reboot, the virus stays away (most of the time 2 reboots), after that you can re-enable the system restore, it will create new restore files without the virus in it.

I am trying to download the program now, so i can see how to uninstall it

That's what I meant.

I fear that Gal isn't writing anymore, because the PC isn't able to go online anymore ...

Hi guys!
I'm soo sorry, but I've missed all the other posts you wrote about that virus I got. Hubby had Kaspersky, but now we use Antivir, appearently a very good antivirus program. The Avast and Pc-cillin Lady Rain talked about, were both a pain to use. Pc cillin is still on my pc, and from time to time, I get troubles because of that and Avast takes like forever to scan my pc (I'm sorry 'bout that too, Lady Rain)
You guys did all you could to help me here, but hubby was soo impatient, that he cleared his hard disc instantly. I'm sorry that I missed all your posts, don't know how that happened.
I will keep your posts in mind next time, there was a lot of good advice in it.
Thanks again and hope I never end up in this thread again

http://www.free-codecs.com/

u can download the media player classic which has the MP3 codec built into it (by the way, it's using LAME MP3 codec).

on the other hand, Barta, i think i'll e-mail it to u.

@ Gal -> glad to know u got it all sorted out though hubby had to use the last resort first. anyways, prevention is better than cure so please choose wisely what to install this time round.

edit: Barta, here's a specific link to the codec u need.

Avast is THE suckiest anitivir program i've ever used. It slows down the entire system because it scan EVERY file that is being accessed. I had to disconnect from the internet and shut down Avast just to play a game on a normal level. otherwise the framerate would've been even LOWER than it is now.

using AVG now and it is goood.

Yep, that is what I ment. Avast took the whole night to scan my pc, if that isn't long enough? And not to mention it didn't found one virus, while Antivir found several trojans later!

Hmmm strange that about Avast!! I mean, I have it running on 1 of my PC's, the one I use for online playing, and IIRC there's a setting somewhere that lets Avast!! know that you are playing fullscreen and it wont interrupt it just sits in the Back ground, and I only have a 2.8 CPU ? Heh and 1 gig of ram that would prolly help

Just curious, I have this MSOchatche hidden on my D:disc (you can't see it in 'my computer' but you can if you try to unrar something to the D:disc). Anyone know what it is/if it's dangerous?

Couldn't they just have added the folder to the MS Office folder? Oh, right, we're talking Microsoft !

Anyway, thanks for the info Raze .

The MSOcache is just where is autosaves your documents... so if it crashes (and since its MICROSNOT, it probbably will) this is where it will recover your files from...
