Well I went ahead and bought it.

I don't know anything about EE cpus - not sure if any of the cpu choices given to me were EE.

Lews - the extra cost and current problems with support/drivers for cards in SLI, plus the massive power required - around 800+ PSU, convinced me to stay with a single card.

I see - well I don't think my pc is on the EE list so.

I've been looking into it and the processor I got has a max power load of 125w -which is really high, compared to the EE processors of around 65w - and also the faster equivilent processor from Intel, the core duo, is also only around 65w on full load.

That makes the processor I got a total hog regarding power comsumption. I'm glad so I went for 700W power.

Hi,

Is there anyone here who can help in removing a problem?

This popup comes up when I start Windows XP.
Window cannot find ‘C:\Windows\system32\printer.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

This popup comes up even when I'm offline and about five minutes after I'm on Windows XP
Warning! Potential Spyware Operation!
Your computer is making unauthorized copies of your system and Internet files. Run full scan now to pervent any unathorized access to your files! Click YES to download spyware remover…

This popup comes up when I try to add/remove programs, set date/time, view system info, etc...
This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

I've used Norton and it identified a Trojan.KILLAV. I also used Spybot Search and Destroy and have a Hijackthis log if anyone can help.

The prompt to download spyware remover is actually spyware itself.

Download 'AVG free anti-spy ware'

Install, update, then scan and delete anything it finds.

Not sure what if that will correct the printer.exe error, but it seems you have spyware and removing it is the first priority.

I'd call it "dummy.exe".

This post, with a similar problem (malware not named, that I noticed), describes how to use SmitFraudFix to help get the computer working again.

Another similar problem (presumed incomplete removal of a different virus), and suggestions to fix it is here, and one with just the security alerts here.

please HELP remove pop-up C:\WINDOWS\system32\printer.exe

And doN't go into the internet in admin mode.

You know, most users are secretly admins - by Microsoft, because it's easier for working this way.

I'm writeing an expert system for school, and I've chosen to write a program that checks why a computer doesn't boot. The problem is that I need more rules (causes for the computer not to boot). I've covered power failure, monitor failure, hard drive failure, processor failure due to overheating, and I've started dabbling in OS failure (no OS installed, OS installed on wrong HD and corrupt boot.ini). Can anyone come up with more reasons why a computer wouldn't boot? Thanks in advance.

Maybe I should put that instead of corrupt boot.ini as final result...

Have you Googled 'boot problem' and various similar terms?

A defective power supply can spin up fans and turn on lights, but not boot the computer (no POST). This is relatively rare, but should probably be mentioned so people don't assume the power supply must be fine if the fans come on.

There is an on/off switch on most power supplies, which is possible to accidentally hit if you are moving the computer or reaching behind it to plug something in.

Especially during shipping, RAM or video cards, etc can work party loose, and can cause boot failure.

Any rattling sound when the computer is moved or tilted is probably a bad thing. A loose screw left in the case can get behind the motherboard and cause a short.

Cables are also a potential problem, though more when building or repairing a system than when it is untouched under a desk. Mice or insects can get into computers and chew on wires, though it is probably more common for cats to jump onto computers / monitors for the heat, and knock cables loose.

When plugging everything in again after moving the computer, some people just look for where stuff fits if it is not colour coded or labeled readably. They may plug the video cable into an onboard video connector rather than the video card (if they don't know the difference to start with, you would have to explain it as vertical and probably near the middle or top of the case vs horizontal and lower down).

A defective video card can cause boot problems, though it is more likely the monitor will remain black or give a 'no signal' error.

Well, even sound cards can cause the computer to lock up while booting. This can sometimes be accompanied by loud and high-pitched screeching or humming noises from the speakers. If you're very unlucky, the computer won't even complete POST mode.

The only thing you can do is to reseat the card if it's still working or replace it.

Thanks for the help. I got my 20 rules, and I didn't even have to resort to corny questions like "have you gone loose on the mobo with a crowbar any time lately?".
