Orkut is a gigantic online community of over 3996446 people. It's strange that you two don't know of it.
It's ok. I will send an invitation. It should not take more than two weeks. The server is slightly slow.

It's a social network: About orkut

For Alrik and others who sometimes share essays, stories and other creative works, you should be aware of this extract from their "Terms of Service" --

orkut.com's proprietary rights

By submitting, posting or displaying any Materials on or through the orkut.com service, you automatically grant to us a worldwide, non-exclusive, sublicenseable, transferable, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable right to copy, distribute, create derivative works of, publicly perform and display such Materials.

The only other complaint I've seen about Orkut (from an admittedly "obsessed" user) is the encouragement to rank friends using "karma points".

As Annalee Newitz posted at AlterNet.org: "The friend-karma system is quite simply hideous. I like the idea of naming people my friends, but I don't want to rank them in terms of anything. Friendship is not about hierarchy. It's about exchanging ideas and saying hello once in a while. Only a creep would rank his or her friends, and making those rankings an explicit part of the social network encourages the worst kind of cliquish, competitive behavior."

Phew ! And I thought it was about Orks ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

[Ork is the German spelling version of Orc, in the original translations of LOTR.]

And I'm quite concerned about this text you just showed, Rincewind ... I'm glad that I can post my things here, more or less freely. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

@Alrik
I need your email id to send an invitation. I can bet that joining will be a lot of fun. There are a lot of games and a lot of other stuff you can talk about there.

I have send an invitation to Lews. You can invite as many friends as you want and you can join as many communities as you want (of course there will be an upper limit - 999 for friends AFAIK).
1. Click on the link in your mail
2. Fill in whatever you like to fill about your profile
3. Goto the hompage of your profile
4. Accept my invitation
5. Read my profile <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shhh.gif" alt="" />
6. Look at the communities that I have joined
7. Join the <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> community
8. Look around - you will know how to invite more friends

I have no friends at all at the moment! So all those who want to be my friends should post here and make sure that I can see their email addresses.

In the meanwhile I am going to invite those who, I think, will not mind being invited by 'strangers' - Like I have already done with Lews.

Janggut has joined.
But he has not logged in his homepage yet.
Neither he has joined the <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" /> community there.
Hope he does it soon and fills more of his profile.

I think I have several problems ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

First, I got this message :

Quote
The username you chose has a bad word in it.
Please choose a proper username.

I used my Forum-Name "Alrik Fassbauer" as the User Name, ans I think the invitation process believed there was an "[nocando]" in it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/delight.gif" alt="" />

Second, Alrk Fassbauer is NOT my real name, but I think the invitation process believes so ... Wallace, have you sent the invitation assuming that was my real name ?

The error was most likely due to the space in the username (possibly the length).

Most free forums, etc just need a working email address to register. If you are not conducting financial transactions, etc nobody will be checking that entered names are plausible, let alone legitimate (you can enter Peter Pan if you want). It may be against the terms of service to enter a false name, though.

user name - AlrikFassbauer
first name - Alrik
last name - Fassbauer

Okay. In a different forum someone actually believed that this was my real name. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" />
