You're right. It has rules and characters, just like any other RPG. I can remember playing RPGs with my car tracks. We'd build a city and set up businesses in it, each of which paid a daily wage (in marbles). We'd buy and sell nicer cars and houses. We had a great time!

Pen & Paper version of Dungeons & Dragons... Too long ago to even think about I soon switched to AD&D, and I've played quite a few RPGs since then, including a fair number of CRPGs. Overall, AD&D 1st ed is my favourite. Nothing beats the atmosphere of a really good RPG session

Don't you remember Gumdrop Mountains and Molasses Swamp.

Oh, we had more fun in the construction sites. You can make all those empty half-built rooms anything you want them to be!

I was always building huts and tree houses which I then had to guard with my bow, you know in case some evil men came

hey, isn't .... i mean wasn't that dangerous? construction sites aren't even safe enough to work in (unless u are vigilant) let alone play. but that sounds like lots of fun with all the rooms for games. the closest we had for rooms were big cardboard boxes which we would use as pretend cars, houses, ships etc.

i always envy those with tree houses because i never been in one, let alone having one. the trees near my old place were riddled with red ants that have terrifying bites.

wow! nice real life multiplayer RPGs!

You're meant to get bumps and bruises as a kid! The sites were fairly safe. It was just houses, so everything was bolted down well. Falling or metal edges were the only real dangers. But now there's temporary fencing up at every construction site. I think some people have realised how much unguarded construction materials are worth.

Janggut, you must have had somewhere that was what it wasn't when you were playing as a kid?

Wellcome to the forum Dauwin . The problem I find is that most of the new RPG's aren't compelling enough, they're too simplified and combat based IMO .

I think Ube is referring to the fact (correct me if am wrong) that most RPG's in the past have been very linear and more combat oriented. True enough I would say...there werent exactly multiple endings in any of the Zelda games...the only true RPG's (you are all going to hate this) I have really experienced are Open ended MMO's.

Before your heads explode let me explain...

There are three types of games that fit this role i think

1. Games like the original Zelda, great story, great fighting etc etc but no matter what you do you simply progress as the same guy in the same story...LINEAR

2. The NWN type games, you make more choices you develop a characters general attitudes/outlooks but the game still ends the same way, less linear SAME BEGINNING AND END for everyone...

3. In an open ended MMO like shadowbane (or like darkfall will hopefully be) you reach the pinnacle of role playing...not only do you develop your characters attitude and alignment, but also his reactions and speech. There is no endgame per se...You can create nations, topple them whatever. Granted there are the 14 year old simpletons that run around using nothing but L337 speak and crap but they are easy to add to the ignore list.

Ok ok ok now you can call me wrong~!

You're wrong, I am referring to the fact that most games focus too much on combat (which is rarelly very good in the first place), and therefore lack in story and characterinteraction. No games released today has the interaction of Fallout, Arcanum or Torment, and THAT is what I am referring to . That is allso what I want, and is not very likelly toget (only game that looks promising is Dragon Age, made by Bioware, who hasn't done any of the games I miss).

all in the backyard, HEF. or to be more accurate, around the house & neighbourhood. i used to live in government quarters (my dad was a policeman), barracks to be exact. since the floors of the barracks are raised, there's a lot of space 'neath for kids to play/horse around. for older kids (10-12), they would venture further out to nearby streams or ponds to catch fish & stuff. but that's not RPG.

there were times though when we would play in some of the empty barracks around the camp but it was very risky as the barrack weren't in good condition & in need of major repair plus with no adult supervision, that's really playing with fire. but as kids, FUN is first & foremost with whatever else as distant second.

most of the time when i was a kid, my brothers were my play buddies so we shared most of our toys. come to think of it, we did a lot of role plays with our toys (robots, soldiers, vehicles, building blocks etc) & made worlds of our own. it was really really fun that many times we wouldn't put away our toys as we wanted to continue the game the next day & onward.

*takes a bow* thank you

and iv played NWN (quite addicted to it infact) and iv helped in building a mod for NWN.. there is quite a bit you can do with it. you can make it all quest base or hack and slash.. there are so many options out there its nuts.. great game..

hehe.. just my 2 cents..

I'm acually considering trying NWN again ... The problem with it was the fact that it was too dungeonbased (ie you ran around in a dungeon and killed monsters in order to find a bosslike person and then kill HER). I acually stopped playing in a neverending cave that didn't seem to lead somewhere in act 2...

The World is waiting for the "World of Aventuria" I just wanted to post it here to give you an insight about DSA. There is a Web site out there with the name "The Dark Eye" (which actually is DSA translated into English), but things are very slow at the moment, since they also produce the english Shadowrun section nowadays (FanPro had bought them).

I've decided to open a new thread with news about The Dark Eye when things are beginning to come into motion again.
