I'm also looking for older games - but rather Adventures.

Are you guys looking for really old games? Like, back in the dos-only games. If so, I could point out where some very good demos and sharewares are.

The only DOS-game I'm interested in is Ultima 7, which I have downloaded, but have problems installing, due to the lack of DOS in Windows XP (I have an american emulator, which is difficult to use).

If you haven't yet played Planescape: Torment, you should certainly find it if you can It's considered by many, including myself, to be the best CRPG ever created

I'm one of those unfortunates who is a big RPG fan, but hasn't played Planescape Torment. Can't find it anywhere now. Perhaps it's also a little bit too outdated graphics-wise.

I know a place, it's called pirate bay...

But you're probablly right, it's a bit outdated graphiclly. But with PS:T, that doesn't matter, trust me on that.

You can still find PS:T on eBay (I got it new a few months ago for CAN$10, bundled with another RPG). Currently a couple people have unopened copies of the original release listed, though the one with the most copies only ships within the US.

BTW, anyone know what the difference is between the original 4 CD release and the 2 CD re-release (besides 2 CDs)?

My first cRPGs were Final Fantasy and another series on the original Nintendo.

PS:T might be outdated graphically, but it has yet to be equalled in terms of storyline

Raze...

The 2CD version was patched, I believe. Beyond that, there are no differences I have ever heard of.

Thanks, I was just curious if they cut out 2 CDs just by better compression or organization, or if they had to remove stuff or use lower resolution graphics, etc.
The 2 CD version is patched to the latest official version (there is also an unofficial patch).

If the emulator you have is DosBox, than I know exactly what you mean. If it's not, than I suggest getting DosBox, because it works very well.

Here, this is some info I used to learn how to use it.

[color:"yellow"] First, download DOSbox from the DOSbox website at sourceforge.net. Run the file and DOSbox will be installed on your computer. Now go to the folder where you installed DOSbox and run DOSbox, or go to the Windows Start Menu and use the shortcut to start DOSbox. Two windows will open. One is the kernel and the other one is the window you have to type in. It will start on virtual drive Z:\. Because most people don't have a Z:\ disk on his/her computer, you have to go to the drive you installed the game on. Usually this will be the C:\ or D:\ drive. I will use the C:\ drive as an example. First, type "mount c c:\". This will recognize the C:\ disk as the Virtual C:\ disk within DOSbox.

Now type "C:". Guess what, you’re now on your C:\ disk! If you extracted the game called "game.exe" to the folder games\game, you have to browse to there. You can do this by using the cd commands. For example, first type "cd games" and then "cd game". Then you have to start the game. This is simple enough to remember: type "game", without the extension (.exe). The game will then start so you can play it.

The game may run very slow or DOSbox may crash. If DOSbox crashes, it is useless to try again. DOSbox won’t work in this case, but there are more options to allow your games run in Windows XP.
[/color]

Hope that helps.

Man, I haven't played any of the original BG games. Just the first Dark Alliance. I should really try them out, you guys make them sound interesting.

My first cRPG was "Champions of Krynn" on my C64. Played the whole trilogy after that ("DeathKnights" on my C64, "Dark Queen" on PC).

I am close 50 years old and have played many CRPG, although a mortgage and kids has seriously curtailed what I can afford these days.

My first was on an Amiga - Megatraveller, it was a space RPG, I thought it was quite advanced for its time.

My favourites ( at the time I played them )

Underworld 1 Stygian Abyess, I think I got more play out of this than Oblivion!

The first Elder Scrolls - the main quest dungeons were designed individually and had a variety that all later Elder Scroll games, inlcuding Oblivion have not reproduced.

Crusaders of the Dark Savant - the only CRPG where I have had to resort to serious help to solve.

Ravenloft 2 - I think this was the pinnacle of the SSI games

Wizards and Warriors - one the better ones in the last 5 years.

There has been some that I could never really get into --

I bought Dungeon Siege from a bargain bin last month and have tossed it, all hack and slash and a serious no brainer.

Standard question (from my side): have you played Planescape:Torment?

And Dungeon Siege is one of those "action-RPG's". You can check my feel towards those on the first page, second post .

Of course I played Zelda like so many others but never got into Final Fantasy.

The first RPG for pc that i've seen, was on a friend's computer. That would be Ultima Underworld 2 and it looked huge.

When I first got a pc, I was more into adventure games with a tone of RPG to them. Games such as Quest for Glory, Dragon Lore and Druid.

Where most people will say that Deus Ex is a FPS/RPG, I still look at it as a first person shooter. With its physics of running, jumping and shooting, it's a shooter.

On the other had, the original System Shock is a Sci-fi/RPG in my eyes. This was the first roleplaying that I have played. With a solid month of game play to complete it, this was a RPG.

The original System Shock was my first RPG on the pc.

Edit:

Currently playing Darkstone.

The first one I got to actually play was Bards Tale 2 on the spectrum. D&D dungeon crawl with a party. Quite advanced for the time I think...and better than the rubbish 'new' bards tale that came out, which was a completely different game!

Then followed by SSI's 'Pools of radiance.' Now that was a great game...(the old amgia one, again not the 'new' rubbish one!!)

back in the day i had little atari exposure so my first rpg was dragon warrior for the nes system then might and magic. I usually took breaks and role played Rambo with a squirt gun outside the house. Then after years upon years pass by i get a hold of other nes rpgs. After that I had this weird Ultima game where i was the avatar the red champion, its where i first heard the phrase as a kid, "choose your poison" omg the barkeep is selling poison in drinks! this game was for DOS and win95 or so it claimed and i lost the game 3 years later. Then baldur's gate chapter 1 for the computer was my treasure for a while. I was exposed to diablo, quest for glory V and return to krondor. After that i got the other chapters to baldurs gate and completed it with sword coast and then Baldur's gate 2 shadow of amn, in highschool as a freshmen i met up with some crazy people who are now my friends lol who taught me dungeon and dragons 3.0 pen and paper then i got diablo 2 which i had to work really hard for a computer upgrade lol i had no money for the min specs so i had to build a new computer....fun stuff.... 20 mowed lawns. Play station 1 psx came out Then by now i was old enough for my first part time job so i could pretty much by any available computer game or console game. playstaion 2 comes out and i get the summoner for it. years Later i went to college and during college i was exposed to NES roms and sega roms....and thus i was able to play er i mean see other people play all the rpgs for the nes console and sega console that i missed out on. ps some of the games were in japanesse or french heh so i couldn't understand everything

yeap and one thing led to another and then people around the world heard the earth quake when ever someone shut close the JawS of ObLiViOn!

i think an edit will come soon

This is SpArTa!! oh im sorry, I must have took a wrong turn..somewhere...(runs away)
