*** Super-Duper Cliff's Notes version -- RPG Developers: Stop creating "open ended, epic-scale" time-consuming worlds while ignoring the people that only have 10-30 minutes a night to play *and progress* in your game, i.e. the much sought-after, "casual," "mainstream" player. ***

Quote
I may only have 30 minutes to devote to gameplay on any given night and it may take me that long just to remember where I was and what I was doing within the game, much less make any further progress. So rather than spend 30 minutes accomplishing very little, I simply choose not to play the game at all until I have several hours to devote to it.

Not to be rude but I think this guy is confused. The first quote makes no sense at all and is what the whole article is about. The second quote makes total sense and is the answer to all his problems.

Any added entertainment he might want, will only add +hours to already long games. So do you think turning Oblivion into a +200 hour game will solve his problem? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/stupid.gif" alt="" />

Oh, on a note, when I play an RPG I want to be able to "play" it, and I don't want to have to "waste" time growing carrots (or whatever). Things that can turn into interesting mini-games (like the persuationsystem in Oblivion, or tradeing) while not takeing too much time can be nice additions to make the game more varied though. But you'll have to remember that these mini-games is "add-ons" and it's the story/characterinteraction/general gameplay that is the main thing.

That clrealy depends on what you mean by the word "play". Some people define "playing" by playing simulations, too ... otherwise Railroad Tycoon or SimCity wouldn't have been there.

Of course, the main focus in an RPG should be RPG, otherwise it's not an RPG. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />

Exactlly.

But what I was saying is that (for example) growing carrots shouldn't be in the way of the "RPG". But that doesn't mean that growing carros couldn't be a fun way of variyng the gameing experience so you wouldn't do the same thing all of the time.

You mean carrots shouldn't get experience points while growing up ? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Alrik, please stop my ribs are hurting, I have you down as this really deep intense sort of character, and then you come out with these "extreme" wit-isism's (if that's a word?), so please do this old guy a favour and put those in spoiler mode after a brief message of .. say [color:"red"] Warning!! An interview English language about Drakensang : http://www.crpg.ru/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=2105

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post them here. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I will try to answer them as good as possible. Even trivial ones. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Only exceptions : They must have something to do with The Dark Eye RPG system or / and Drakensang itself. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Any help is greatly appreciated.:) Not that I know too little, but I'm always saying : "4 Eyes see more that just 2." <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

There is an very interesting discussion about this article on RPGWatch. Here : http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1021

It includes a rather detailed discussion on the actual sales of PS:T !
