The real storm will be BD without malicious code

Larian does not have the rights to re-release BD without the corrupted code made by the StarForce gang?

Ill like to get the game but when i noticed that has a virus in it, well, im still waiting for Larian programmers to take it out or some skilled programmer to rip it off

ps: 1k sorrys for my tarzan like english

Never had any problems with Starforce myself and I don't blame companies for trying to protect their products from being copied. It's not a virus and it'll work fine on your computer like it does on everybody else's.

I don't blame companies for trying to protect their products either, but the tactics used by starforce are questionable to say the least. And although there is no proof that it could damage hardware (I am sure it can) it's not entirely healthy for your system. This is also the reason why I haven't reinstalled <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> (or trackmania (such a shame for such a fun game)) after my yearly format.

And don't get me started on the compatibility iissues of starforce on a 64 bit system or how you are going to lay this game under Windows Vista. IMHO a protection that is restricts you in OS choice, is a bad protection.

I rather have a simple serial key activation over internet(no private data will be send only the key) and such then a buggy starforce malware driver. Because believe starforce IS malware.

What problems does Starforce allegedly cause? I'm interested because I frequently play Trackmania Sunrise.

i didnt say anything about protection, ive talking about the starforce malware, that piece of code violates many rules of programming and operative system rules

Regular programmers never think on these techniques, you must be used to do that to think in a solution like that

You know that other companies have done re-releases of their products without the sf "protection"

And if you know what happened with Galactic Civilization 2, you will know what kind of people made that thing and i dont want that on my machine

alleging several problems associated with the protection system, including disk drive performance degradation, weakening of operating system security and stability

StarForce (all version known until August 2006) creates a real security problem when installed. The access control list of the drivers are set such that any user, including those without administrative rights, are allowed to change the association with the executable. Exploitation is simple: The user changes it to point at any arbitrarily chosen executable, which is executed with full system privileges on next reboot. This can be verified with the security tool "srvcheck2", which detects such potentially insecure driver configurations.

The fact that it collects data and sends it back to its designers is also very controversial, because users are not told of it doing so.

For example, here's one of the common problems brought by Starforce: under Windows XP, if packets are lost during the reading or writing of a disk, XP interprets this as an error and steps the IDE speed down. Eventually it will revert to 16bit compatibility mode rendering a CD/DVD writer virtually unusable. In some circumstances certain drives cannot cope with this mode and it results in physical hardware failure (Most commonly in multiformat CD/DVD writer drives). A sure sign of this step down occurring is that the burn speeds will get slower and slower (no matter what speed you select to burn at). Starforce, on a regular basis, triggers this silent step down. Until it reaches the latter stages most people do not even realise it is happening.

I'm okay with that in theory, but some of these anti-piracy software programs are so potent that they cause issues for legitimate game buyers. One of the leading brands, StarForce, is notorious for not only making it difficult for a small percentage of legitimate users to load up StarForce-protected games, but also for leaving potentially problem-causing StarForce software behind on your PC, even after you've deleted the game it was protecting. And this isn't just some story that I've read about online or in emails from readers. No, it happened to me.

Last year, my work PC suddenly began blue-screening (crashing) any time I popped an audio CD into either of my two optical drives. I went online and learned that other people were having this problem and that it appeared to be StarForce-related. Deleting my StarForce-protected games did nothing. I had to run a StarForce-removal utility before my system - filled only with legal, licensed software - could play audio CDs again.

I can personally testify of a slowing cd drive to the point I taught the drive was broken.

Next to the technical problems some tactics starforce use are downright scary and their "shut up or we will sue" mentality isn't something you want to make you hug them. And the little fact that the posted a link to download a game that had removed the protection after the complaints of many players raises questions of maffia tactics.

But then again since ubisoft dropped starforce and the financial situation of digital jesters. I don't think we will be seeing starforce any time soon on larians next games <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />.

I hope, consumers finally got a boycott working with ubi

If you are paranoid about protection instead of sales, there are really easy techniques (but im not going to explain them ^_^) that you can use instead of 3rd party programs if the company want to give to the crackers like 6 months of work b4 the nocd is released, cos' if they make the nocd in time the sales will get a lil' boost

If you are worried about starforce you should not. All you have todo is install the game, play it through while not burning any discs and then uninstalling the game and starforce with the free removal tool:

http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55

Thats atleast my plan. If I get stuck I can always save the savegames and reinstall the game/starfoce later on when I feel like continuing the game. I will keep in mind to be careful with the dvd/cd drive and make sure the double firewalls are on high alert all the time. Its a piece of cake.

P.S Games dont necesserily need killerprotection to have superb sales. Galactic Civilizations 2 is a good example.

You don't want Galactic Civilzations 2 on your machine ???

Edit : I just read that in the German "Gold Games" compilation <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beyond.gif" alt="" /> indeed has no Starforce copy protection.

I declare myself now as a virus.
