There is going to be an XBox360 version of the game, so it must support DirectX 9. That doesn't preclude the PC version from supporting some DirectX 10 features, but I doubt Larian had enough lead time to build DirectX 10 in from the start, or the resources to overhaul everything afterwards. Also, DirectX 10 is Vista only, and I don't think Larian would want to limit their target audience (depending on when the game will be released), since RPGs are already a niche market.

I also believe that Direktx10 would exclude some customers who are still running non-vista systems.

In my opinion, Number 10 is far too much overestimated. I can see practically no real reason to use it - from a consumer's point of view.

I'm not intending to switch to Vista for a long time yet, so no.

agreed, Vista is not something essential (yet, maybe) therefore directx10 is also not something crucial in gaming.

needless to say, of course, that microsoft would beg to differ, considering the fact that they want to earn as much in every possible way.

I agree, it's still way too early to switch to DirectX 10

I answered 'no' since it still has to run on my 3 years old laptop. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

I answered yes. Since the game will be DirectX 9 compatible for sure, i think directX 10 features can be included for those who DO have vista. This will add a new public without excluding the old public.

DirectX 10 model is over 1000 times better. I am not joking/exaggerating. Visit Hardware Secrets to see the actual numbers. In case you aren't yet convinced, take a look at some of the screenshots produced by DirectX 10 compatible games on gamespot.com.

Yes, but what I don't like at all is that Direktx is pure indirect marketing for buying hasta la vista !

It's like a gentle force to buy it.

If it had been *entirely* for gamers, *then* they would've released it for let's say xp as well.

No matter how wonderful DX10 is, if the vast majority of gamers are still using XP then it's not a good idea to create a game that does not work on DX9.

Over the next few years, gamers will slowly switch over to Vista I have no doubt, but right now it's only a tiny minority.

If it's possible to create something that works on DX9 and DX10, obviously that's best - but the impression I got (And which may be wildly inaccurate) is that the two systems are not really that similar, and it would almost be like creating two separate games. I'm not sure that's feasible.

So I guess it all reduces to when will they release this next RPG.

And no... 10 and 9 differ at hardware level... they are not compatible.. However there can be workarounds.

I just guess they just didn't want to make it compatible to slightly force people towards hasta la vista.

That's how MS works.

@Alrik... your point is taken. But also note that Vista is compatible with DX9c.

BTW about when will this next RPG be released? I can't wait to play it.

Yes, the game should be made for DX10 -- for all you Vista gamers out there.
And yes for supporting DX9, as well -- since not everybody has adopted to Vista, already.

Hell, I don't remember seeing many "Windows XP ONLY" games probably until Dungeon Siege 2 and Fable: TLC -- all which Microsoft published.

there are programs which make directX10 work on xp too <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

anyway, i really think it should support both, concerning the release date which will probably be somewere in 2008, it really would be good to have both supported.

Anyway, theres no loss right? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

Voted "don't care". The game has to be designed to run on DirectX 9 so that it can run on older PC's and the XBox 360, which means that any DirectX 10 effects will be superficial.

I think it is better to use dx9 too.Because not everybody has Vista and we must count in the people that can not buy vista, besides dx9 is powerful enough with good water effects and stuff.(Yea I know that dx10 is way better but Vista is a pretty new and expensive OS)
