Hi

I seem to have a problem with my sight radius. I only see someone when I'm standing right next to them. If I move a bit further, they disappear from the screen (although they still show on my minimap).

If I load a previous save (that doesn't have this problem), the loss of sight suddenly happens after playing a while.

(I just finished Iona's dungeon.)

Does somebody know what's happening?

Thanks alot.

Have you installed the latest patch?
Most re-release versions of the game should already be updated to the latest 1.0034A version, as shown in the bottom right corner of the main menu, so would not need to be patched. The DVD version is already updated, and the patch (designed for the CD version) should not be installed.

This fairly rare, but IIRC can be associated with equipping and unequipping items with an Elven Sight or Ranger Sight skill bonus, while also knowing the skill at a particular level (so the combined skill level adds up to more than 5). If installing the patch doesn't help, or if you already have the latest version, there are several ways to fix your sight.

The sight range can be modified directly, if you are comfortable using a hex editor.
see Some more hex offsets..., and perhaps Teleporting Anywhere, via hex editor as a reference.

Alternately, you can use iZakaroN's SaveEditor (or from Kiya's site, with description) to unlearn any levels of the sight skills that you have, then load the save and learn/re-learn Elven Sight, save and use the editor again to unlearn Elven Sight. The sight range is added to your base value when you learn the skill, so by using the editor to repeatedly re-learn it, you can increase the sight range as much as you wish. Since you are not completely blind, it should not take much to get back to a normal sight range (test it by entering new areas and seeing how the fog of war clears around your character).

In any case, you may wish to use the editor to unlearn the sight skills, to make sure they don't cause a problem with the associated equipment bonuses.

You could use DAD's item editor to give a ring a sight bonus, but then if you took it off (visiting the dwarven king, or the bar fight) you would be blind again. IIRC you can remove skill bonuses using the item editor, so that could help eliminate future problems mixing with the character's passive sight skills.

I have installed the latest patch.

After further experimenting I found out it had to do something with the 'Strange Amulet Mardec'. It gives a +1 bonus to elven sight, and I learned 3 ranks of elven sight, so I have a +4 (none of my other equipement gives a bonus to elven sight).

If I take this necklace of, my sight reduces by about 2/3, seeing as I only have +3 to elven sight instead of +4 I find this a pretty big reduction.

So before I start with the SaveEditor, is this reduction normal gamemechanics or is it doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Your sight range should not drop (other than a temporary spell effect). With Elven Sight at level 3, your range should be twice that compared to the start of the game (if you recall clearing the fog of war around Aleroth).

The base sight range for a new character is 12. The levels of Elven Sight add an additional 2, 4, 8, 10 and 12 to the sight range. Assuming no other sight bonuses, removing the amulet to drop from level 4 (36 total sight range) to level 3 (26 total) should be almost a 28% reduction (so roughly a 1/3 drop).

A reduction of 2/3 when you remove the amulet (drop of 10 sight range) implies your sight range is 5 when the amulet is off. It should be 26 (neglecting other sight bonuses), so you could learn levels 4 and 5 of Elven Sight (if you are at a high enough the character level), save, and then use the editor to unlearn a couple levels (so you are not using your skill points to fix a game glitch). Alternately, you could unlearn the 3 levels you have, load the game, re-learn up to level 3, save, unlearn, load and re-learn level 2 (or just keep going until you get the sight range back to normal).
