After attempting a guild without master quest early in the game, I quickly exited and saved it for later. Now, 10 levels later I am back to it to find out Williams died and the quest failed. Am I screwed here or is there another way to get the sigil to enter the Hall of echoes?

I'm fairly confident that it's just a side-quest and its outcome doesn't affect the main storyline, though others may wish to correct me if I'm wrong.

I have not made it that far but this is what I found on Gamefaqs:

Hall of Echoes [FLHOE]
--------------
Location: by the time you can enter, it's marked on your map
-Kill all the Nest Dais to drop the barrier
-Fly into the giant orb to proceed to the next area

-You must defeat seven sets of opponents in the arena to proceed. They drop
legendary, unique, and epic quality items, but the level of the items is
extremely random (level 2 items can and do sometimes drop), and you cannot go
back to get them enchanted. It's extremely unlikely for any of them to be
better than what you have at this point, so don't waste your time trying for a
good drop.

-After defeating the last opponent, step through the teleporter to the east to
proceed.

-Fly through another giant orb to reach the final area.

-Regardless of how you proceed through the dialogue, the final battle begins.

A Guild without a Master [FQGWM]
------------------------
Received From: Williams
Location: Broken Valley Mine Office
1: Defeat all the black ring in the building
-You fail the quest if the guild master dies
Rewards: 1500xp, 320g + 1 (rare item, 320g, 375xp)

If you listen to what Talana said to you when you first enter the Mine-gate, you know you can better leave this place and store it for later wink
This is a place you can do later when you can transform in dragonform (after you have your Battle Tower!) and the Black Rings in the Mine Tower are Level 28 or L 29 !! So I think impossible to rescue William from the Black Rings before you at least level 24 or 25 (?).

Going in the Mine is neccesary for solving the Main Quest I believe (for having the "Sigil").
But failing the quest "A Guild without a master" isn't a drama. You still can enter the Mine and find what you're looking for wink
If William got killed, I believe the key is lying on the floor in top of the Mine Tower wink
(but not sure about the right place you can find William's key)
